Oct. 5 Special Prof. Carl Stephenson, 68, authority on medieval history and professor at Cornell university for 24 years until his retirement in June, died here yesterday. Among Prof. Stephenson's works is "Mediaeval History," widely used text book.

Born in Fayette, he was graduated in 1907 from DePauw university and received M. A. and Ph. D. de- grees at Harvard.

There were 363 accidents on Western av. in that period, more than on any other artery.

Western has been among the top three streets in number of accidents since the traffic bureau began issuing a quarterly summary eight years ago. O'Reilly said he fired three warning shots and ordered Woods to halt before firing the fatal shot.

Lt. James Gorman of the south park police said the ignition wires in the auto had been crossed and that he believed it was stolen. The second man in the car fled in the direction opposite to Woods, Gorman said. O'Reilly and his partner, James Barlow, said they began pursuing the auto, which bore a Mississippi license when they observeda broken left vent window. M.

H. MacLEAN LEAVES MORE THAN MILLION M. Haddon MacLean, retired vice president of Harris Trust and Savings bank who died Sept. 23 at age of 83, left an estate of more than $1,100,000, it was disclosed yesterday as a petition to admit his will to probate was granted in Probate court. Mr.

MacLean, who lived at 1128 Ridge Evans-ton, retired in 1942. The bulk of the estate went to two sons, Haddon 1425 Ridge Evanston, and Gordon Tarzana, Cal. Mr. Mac-Lean also left $80,000 to his chauffeur for 26 John G. Aronson, who lived in the MacLean home.

Mr. MacLean's two daughters-in-law 'received $25,000 each. The will also made bequests totaling $21,500 to three business associates, the widow of another business associate, and the operator of the 157 acre MacLean farm in Barring-ton.
