Just before going on the air, he discussed fertilizer and manure spreaders with some young men. He began the pro gram with "This-ls the Na tional Farm and Home Hour, brought to you today from Kansas City, Manune!" Familiar Music Hal Turner, W-G-N and WGNTV organist, spoke about trie times wnen ii was hoi su easy to compose a new musical bridge for every chase or ro mance in an adventure serial. One adventure story producer suggested that he detected familiar strains in some of the music," said Hal, and wished that something could be done about it.

I replied in the same tone of voice that I felt exactly the same way about the story and would be glad to arrange the music accordingly." Kay Westfall chuckled over the show no one will let her forget. A deputy officer from Sherif Babb office visited the Bob and Kay show. He told us how important it was that drivers renew their licenses right away. I enthusiastically agreed that it was terrible for drivers to put it off and got out my license to see when it should be renewed. It had expired a month ago." Script All Wet Pierre Andre recalled events in his many adventures with Orphan Annie.

Orphan Annie was just about the first, children's show on the air. In those days, Frank Dahm wrote the scripts the same day of the broadcast. One day Frank and I met at Tribune tower to go to the broadcast. We took a speed boat to the Merchandise mart. When getting off at the mart, we lost the scripts in the water.

Frantically we fished them out then went on the air reading dripping, smeared scripts." Now I'm in on the ground floor of TV, and I'm not giving up my lease, until my landlord evicts me." Well, today, exactly six years after he launched his TV show, Sullivan looks like he's here for good. He's got the best variety show on TV. His show is regularly among the top- ten in the ratings. Almost everybody who is anybody in show business has been on it. Many notables made their TV debuts on "Toast." Some of the best documentary shows ever pre sented have been the work of i Sullivan.

8,500 Entertainers Sullivan has literally combed the nation and Europe for the best in talent. He has made five trips to Europe, ranging the continent from Lisbon to Stockholm, as well as covering the British Isles, to seek out the unusual in entertainment. In six years 8,500 entertainers have paraded past Sullivan. These have included stage and screen stars, choral groups, singers, dancers, animal acts, balancing acts, sword swallow- irs fine arts and rio7.ens of novelties. Some 500 comedians have appeared.

On the very first show Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis made their TV bows. Eugene List, the pianist, was on the same show. Others who made their bows on TV with Sullivan include Jackie 1 a and Rise Stevens, both of whom will brighten his sixth anniversary Ed Suliivan and Rise Stevens confer about tonight's sixth anniversary Toast of the Town show 7 p. m. on WBKB, Bob Hope, Rosemary Clooney, Johnny Ray, Margaret Truman, Victor Borge, Joni James, Sophie Tucker, Jane Froman and Irving Berlin.

Many Film Stars Film favorites who have first been seen on his show include Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner, June Allyson, Burt Lancaster, Humphrey Bogart, Esther Williams, Van Johnson, Ann Blyth, Debbie Reynolds, Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly. Possibly the finest things Sullivan has done are a new kind of biografy. The Oscar Hammerstein story was told not only thru narrative but thru the voices of singers starred in his works, among them the late Gertrude Law rence, Lena Horne, Dolores Gray, Robert Merrill, Mimi Benzell, Lisa Kirk, Yul Brynner and Roberta Peters. The Helen Hayes story fea tured her -in a number of excerpts from plays in which she had starred. The Robert Sher wood story was amplified by contributions from Raymond Massey, Alfred Lunt, Bogart, James Mason and Pamela Kel-lino.

PHONEVISION TEST SUCCESS IN NEW YORK A recently completed Phone-vision test in New York City demonstrated that the system worked perfectly even in highly congested areas filled with apartment buildings, said Dr. Alexander Ellett, vice president in charge of research for Zenith Radio corporation.

Many apartment dwellers are not allowed to use outside antennas, he continued. They, must depend upon "rabbit ear" antennas, which they must move around until they get the best picture. Often there is great difficulty with ghosts and man-made static. "Careful examination of our results in these congested areas shows that in locations and under conditions where it is possible to get an acceptable television picture today it will be possible to get good Phonevision service," he said. With about a dozen soap operas on TV already most of them on CBS, four new ones will corrode the channels on NBC starting July 5.

Time to Live will originate Louise Albritton in Chicago, erstwhile radio soap opera capital. It enmeshes Julie Byron, 28 year old newspaper proofreader whose consuming ambition is to be a reporter. This alone indicates she isn't too bright. In Golden Windows, Juliet Goodwin, 22, who has led a sheltered life on an island off the Maine coast, wants to flee the coop and become a singer in New York City. Her father and boy friend oppose this.

Who'll cook if she leaves? First Love involves newly married Laurie and Zach James who are attempting valiantly to adjust to one another." If this washboard weeper is a hit, the adjustment may go on for years. If soap opera precedence means anything, the James will still be adjusting when their children are married and they are grandparents. The one I'm all aquiver over, tho, is Concerning Miss Marlowe. Her first marriage ended in heartbreak. Daughter of a I Chicago motorman, she married a wealthy Winnetka boy against his parents' wishes.

But he dies of pneumonia just before their daughter is born. Broke and without a job, she gives the child to husband's parents, who are loaded. Later, her mother-in-law takes the girl to Paris and is swallowed up in the confusion in France when the Germans took over in World War II." She never hears from her daughter again. As the series opens, Miss Marlowe, played by Louise Albritton of the movies and stage, begins a new romance with Jeff Howard, an international lawyer. Ronald Anderson, hef English suitor died suddenly a few days before.

Slock up on crying towels, gals. The big day is July 5. INDIAN CABOOSE: Warren Hull, emcee on Strike It Rich, the other day recalled a few boners contestants have pulled on his show. There was the man who said a Scotland yard measures 2 feet 10 inches; the woman who informed Hull that in many states murderers are put to death by electrolysis," and the boy who insisted Daniel Boone was born in a log cabin he built himself. Other dillies: Marseillaise is a French salad dressing; Bis-quit Tortoni discovered radio; Karl Marx is one of the Marx brothers; an Indian baby is called a caboose; open shop is a factory with a window, and a closed shop is one that has air conditioning.

Bismarck, identified as the father of the Kaiser, was very fond of herring; Mata Hari instead of hara kiri means suicide in Japanese; Stowaway is the man with the biggest appetite on a boat; seniors are Spanish men who make love to Spanish senoritas, and antimony is money inherited from your mother's sister. A nice old lady told Hull that asperity is the drug from which aspirins are made, and another contestant exploded the studio audience by defining an executive as a man who puts mur- FLYNN FENCE FREE ESTIMATES any lime of the day or evening.
