40 THE BURLINGTON FREE PRESS TUESDAY, MARCH 30, 1993 Television TV TIPS A TV trio for channel surfers II a i 111 in I II. II in i. I in mil 1 1 Yd (If .1 8 p.m., CBS, "The Magic of David Copperfield SV: Fires of Passion," The Emmy Award-winning illusionist endeavors once again to outdo himself by recreating an ancient ritual in which he is suspended by burning ropes above sharpened stakes and a raging Tire. He also places hockey star Wayne Gretzky's $500,000 baseball card in peril and invites viewers to join in an interactive card trick so be sure to have a deck of cards on hand at airtime. 9 p.m., "Midori Live at Carnegie Hall," Although she arrived in this country at the age of six, renowned violinist Midori waited until she was 19 to make her debut at Carnegie Hall.

This performance from 1991 showcases her remarkable talents and includes a profile of the former prodigy and current classical superstar. In the concert she performs works by Mozart, Beethoven, Ravel and Sarasate. 9 p.m., Vermont ETV, WCFE, "Frontline," "In Our Children's Food" examines the potential risks associated with chemical pesticides whose residues can make America's agricultural products dangerous. Bill Moyers reports on 30 years of pesticide use and why the government has failed to certify safety levels in an industry which has had no independent testing for toxicity. 9:30 p.m., ABC, "Jackie Thomas," overwrought.

It still seems welcome in a TV universe that's light-headed and undernourished. Lange is passionate and talented. That's typical of "Tribeca," which should at least become a permanent habit for your VCR. 10 p.m.: Now it's back to CBS. "Bodies of Evidence" shows up there, then takes its regular spot at 10 p.m.

Fridays. The series premiered last summer, with low expectations. "We did so well that it surprised some people," says Kate McNeil. They did. Ratings were solid and CBS ordered more.

"People seem to love homicide," McNeil says. "As horrified as they are, they're still fascinated to find out who does it and why." There's more to it than that. "Bodies" is from David Jacobs, producer of "Homefront" (which it faces Tuesday) and "Knots his shows have a sense for their characters. By Mike Hughes Gannett News Service What does a half-million dollars look like? Sometimes, it's small and drab and cardboard. When you touch it, people get terribly nervous.

That's true for the Honus Wagner card. "It's tiny," says David Copperfield, who has a special Tuesday. "It's half the size you would think of as a baseball card." It seems ordinary to the non-zealot. That includes Copperfield, whose boyhood passions were magic and movies, not baseball. But to others, it is semi-sacred the first baseball card.

It's owned by hockey star Wayne Gretzky and his boss, valued at $500,000. That's what set up the stunt for Copperfield's special. He made the card disappear. Sure, it's an illusion. Still, Copperfield says, Gretzky gasped.

"You can hear it on the tape." That's part of a night in which channel-jumpers can catch three unusual hours. There's: 8 p.m.: Copperfield, on CBS. After years of making big things a Lear jet, the Statue of Liberty disappear, he does closeup magic with that tiny card. He also tries an escape, complete with burning ropes and the prospect of plunging onto spikes. (We understand that he survives.) He has his latest participatory trick.

To play along, viewers should have a deck of cards ready. 9 p.m.: Switch to Fox, for the second round of "Tribeca." Stephen Lange plays a homeless ex-Marine, struggling for dignity in his life and in his friend's death. Yes, this episode could be considered heavy-handed and From left, Kate McNeil, George Clooney, Lee Horsley and Al Fann star in the season premiere of "Bodies of Evidence." series makes its long-awaited return to the schedule with new episodes. Ben (Lee Horsley) calls on a reluctant psychic, who sees her gift as a curse, to help police locate a multiple murderer. Meanwhile, Nora (Kate McNeil) fears she must choose between love and her career when she meets the perfect man.

The show moves to its regular time slot on Friday. Jerry turns on his imagination to turn up the heat between Laura and him. The only problem is that they're in Ottumwa, Iowa, where Laura is filming a documentary about Jackie, and the rural landscape isn't exactly as conducive to romance as Hawaii. M. Emmet Walsh guest stars as Jackie's father Arlen.
