2B THE BURLINGTON FREE PRESS SUNDAY, MARCH 28. 1993 VERMONT SALE: Town gets back taxes ADAM PIKE RIESNER, Free Press SPRING FEVER: Julie and John Eastman of Winooski bask in the warmth Saturday at Sunset Park in South Burlington. "We both have colds and needed some sunshine," Julie Eastman said. The National Weather Service says today will see increasing clouds with a chance of rain late in the day and a high in the mid-50s. In Brief Abduction attempt reported to police South Burlington police are looking for a man who grabbed a 46-year-old woman as she was getting items out her vehicle in the Price Chopper parking lot shortly after noon Saturday.

Police said the man tried to take the woman to the southwest corner of the lot on Williston Road, but the woman kicked the man in the groin area to break his hold on her, South Burlington police said. The man was last seen fleeing toward the University of Vermont, police said. He is described as about 5 feet, 5 inches tall, with brown, collar-length hair. He was wearing a blue coat and blue or black jeans, police said. Anyone with information on the incident should call South Burlington police at 658-1050.

Propane customers told to check vents A safety alert for propane gas customers is in effect. The unusually heavy accumulation of snow this year prompted the chief operating officer of Green Mountain Propane Gas Co. to call for the alert. "There have been several incidents around the state of snow blocking the outside venting ducts for propane appliances," David Stroupe said. "Even though propane appliances are designed to shut themselves off if the vents are closed, there have been some reports of carbon monoxide building up inside the buildings." Stroupe advised propane gas users to check outlets to ensure that snow has not blocked the vents.

He said the recent warming trend can lead to snow and ice sliding from roofs and can create additional potential for blockage or damage of vents. Stroupe suggested that customers use brooms, not shovels, to remove snow from tanks. From staff reports not firm's Continued from Page IB fibrous threads are thought to cause cancer. He said he is not sure whether the mine, with headquarters in Lowell, will run this year. "Over the years we've suffered from a lot of adverse environmental publicity," he said.

For several years, the Vermont Asbestos Group, which prospered under worker ownership in the mid-1970s, has operated only in the summer, and then with only about a third of the workers it once employed. The land sold Saturday does not affect the mine's ability to operate, said attorney David Stackpole, representing the company. The sale leaves the company with its facilities and about 260 acres in Lowell plus 1,200 in Eden. "We had too much acreage," Manosh said. In the mid-1970s the company's heyday Vermont Asbestos Group was reputed to be the largest worker-owned firm in the country.

The company's 178 workers bought the business in 1974 after its owner, the GAF threatened to close rather than meet expensive environmental standards. Manosh acquired a controlling interest in 1978. Saturday, he said he is no longer a majority stockholder. Manosh was the only other bidder Saturday for the property, which was being sold to pay $155,481 in delinquent taxes, legal fees and interest. "You don't want to sell this very much, Mr.

Manosh," Shea said wryly as the bids increased. After the sale to the Green Mountain Club, attorney Robert Chimileski, on behalf of the town, tried to raise the remaining $114,481 owed to Lowell by of fering an increasing amount of land for sale. State law does not specify whether all or parts of the land must be offered for sale to cover delinquent taxes. The first offer was for 350 acres, the last for 740 all for a price of $114,481. At that point, only the operat ing part of the mine was exempt from the auction block.

"We nev er intended to offer anything that involved the operational part of the mine," Chimileski said. With no bids from the 20 people at the Town Clerk's Of fice, Lowell Selectman Roger Benware finally shrugged and exercised the town right to ac quire the property to protect its interests. "I don't think we had much of a choice," he said. Under the terms of a tax sale, the owners or lienholders have a year to pay the taxes and redeem the land. "If they don't come through within a year and redeem it, we'll have to put it up for sale," Benware said.

"It's too bad it came to this, but sooner or later it will probably close, and it will be a thorn out of the side of Lowell."
