By FREIDA ZYLSTRA (Tribune Color photo by Louii Wolf) CAROLE MATHEWS, who in 1938 was voted "Miss Chicago" in a city-wide beauty contest, now is playing leading roles in Hollywood pictures. In No Man of Her Own," with Barbara Stanwyck, she played a top feminine role, and she recently completed a leading romantic part in Ed Gardner's The Man With My Face." After Carole won the beauty contest (under her real name of Jean Deifel) she gave up her ambition to become a school teacher. She became a dancer instead, and made her first professional appearance at Chicago's College Inn. Going to Hollywood, she got a job as an extra in pictures, and decided she would rather be star. She returned to Chicago to study drama, voice, and ballet at the Chicago Conservatory of Music and Drama.

Then for 26 weeks she had her own radio program on V-G-N as the city's only girl disk jockey in Breakfast Time Frolic with Carole Mathews." On her return to Hollywood, she made a long series of westerns and pictures. Her next move was to New York to do radio and television plays. She made a hit in Ellen Shelly's "With a Silk Thread." She returned again to Hollywood when Gardner offered her one of the leads in "The Man With My Face." Soon she will go back to New York to star in the stage play, Diet For Lovers." She owns a home in San Fernando valley, near Hollywood, and for the time being she plans to divide her time between the stage in New York and pictures in Hollywood. Carole was born in Montgomery. HL, and received her grade school education in Aurora.
