In addition to the usual community news, Delaney would like to see the Independent give space to an expanded "Coming Events" section, enabling townspeople and community groups to advertise their activities for free. Delaney is a firm believer in the importance of community newspapers.

"People need to have the opportunity to know what's happening in their town," she said. "And they need to know they're recognized and important." Milton Matters and the Milton Independent would not be in competition, she added. "It's not going to be them against us. The past is all behind now. They'll do their thing, and we'll do ours." $250,000, but the cost has been closer to $280,000, he said.

Stephens said private contributions can be collected to cover additional costs. Dutton said the extra cost is because of low preliminary estimates for the work. Editor Lynn Delaney said 4,200 copies were headed to households in the area Thursday; the paper also is available in Colchester and Georgia and in drop-off points such as supermarkets and schools. The paper has been produced as an alternative to the town-funded Milton Matters, following the resignation of the staff in December. Selectwoman Ann Dutton is being challenged for re-election to a three-year term by John Stephens. School Director Michael Errecart faces Elaine Lawrence for a three-year seat on the board.
