CHICAGO TRIBUNE, FRIDAY, JUNE 16, 1967 12 Section 2 New Housewares on Display niinois Champagne a Success BY HELEN-DICKINSON I COULD uve OM BY RUTH ELLEN CHURCH iOLOR, particularly avocado, and compact ness seem to be two of ALL KINDS OF EXCITING things were happening in the wine world while I was eating my way thru Europe in the last several months'. They were happening here, in the good old U. S. and I was missing them One event I did not miss, tho I just barely made it, was lip flMjpSfflS 1 the important features in houseware items being shown at the National Housewares exhibit in the International Amphitheater this week. More than 250,000 products for the home are being displayed by 1,143 exhibitors.

This is the first National Housewares exhibit since last July; the one scheduled for January was burned out just hours before it was to open at McCorrnkk Place. For those who like to do their own repairing, there is a new electric percolator and i ti 1 i 1 is the launching of the first Ramey champagne from the Ramey and Allen Winery just south of Monee, HI. On hand were a few prominent wine retailers' and restaurateurs, and Dr. Maynard Amerine, professor of enology at, the University of California at Davis, who has watched the Ramey project since it was but a gleam in Bernard Ramey's eye. Illinois' own champagne vineyards are now proving themselves.

The "too much clay" soil of the -c as Winemaker Bern Ramey mixing bowls, bake-serve-and-store sets, and a serving dish in four different shades of avocado. A well-known manufacturer of kitchen utensils is now producing many items in a deep avocado. This color seems to be very popular with the homemakers. A low and compact blender has a built-in automatic spatula. The same company also is introducing an electric carving knife with a blade that rotates 90 degrees to make carving easier, and a Monee hillsides is exactly what French hybrid grapes need to thrive with a great deal of coaxing and mulching, to be sure, and the finished sparkling wine brought happy smiles all around.

Popular California, New York, and midwestern champagnes were available for comparison in the Ramey and Allen Cellars, and all the professional tasters were walking around beaming at Bern Ramey, Joe Allen, and their charming wives, who had encouraged their husbands every step supervised the conversion. The I. C.s general solicitor, John W. Foster and his wife were present. A delegation representing all of the prominent Bordeaux wine societies arrived in Chicago shortly after I had left, and I regretted missing them, particularly as I did not get to Bordeaux on this trip.

But in London I learned of the doings of the California wine industry on the international scene, and was very proud. Oxford university's old and exclusive dining club, the Phoenix Common room at Brasenose college, celebrated its annual meeting in May with a dinner featuring California wines, exclusively. California champagne and sherry were served before the meal, which began with avocados filled with caviar. Jellied eggs with Madeira were accompanied by California emerald reisling, and lobster a 1'Armoricaine with west coast pinot chardonnay. Tournedos Rossini filet with pate de foie gras had cabernet sauvignon and pinot noir from California to wash it down, and dessert, a meringue with fresh strawberries, was followed with a "savoury," tiny crepes filled with Roquefort sauce, and these came with Califonia port.

In 668 years of existence, no Oxford dining club has so broken with tradition. There have been American members of the Phoenix since the" early 1900s. one of whom was responsible for the California wine dinner. Robert Chick arranged for the importation of the wines and addressed the Phoenix members and Oxford dons and presidents of colleges who were present. Mr.

Chick pointed' out the fact that California wines have a close relationship with European wines, the vines having been brought from Europe in the early days of California winemaking. European wine grapes are grown on American disease-resistant root stock, another point of kinship- In addition to the wines served at this dinner, there were other top quality California wines which went into the club's cellars for aging. The Phoenix club is a more disciplined resurrection of the notorious Hell-Fire club which had its quarters in a labyrinth of caves on the estate of one of its members. It was abolished by royal command on the basis that it "provided such an excellent program of pleasures" that it prevented members of the British government from concentrating on duties. One member of the club, the fourth earl of Sandwich, was said to be so devoted to the riotous living which was one of the club's objectives, that he neglected his responsibilities as first lord of the admiralty.

Ships literally fell to pieces, and the earl's mismanagement contributed largely to British failure in the war of the American Revolution. The Phoenix Club of Oxford today is dedicated to a soberer kind of gastronomy. Many members were surprised at the quality of California wines; others had sampled them here and knew them as worthy partners for the noblest of dishes. 12-speed electric hand mixer which fits neatly into its own storage cabinet. A tea kettle and percolator made of ceramic porcelain bonded to heavy steel are available in houndstooth and paisley patterns, joining a line of casseroles, saucepans, and skillets introduced earlier this year in these French designed patterns.

And for campers, picnickers, and boaters, there is a set of 15 utensils which nest compactly into the largest kettle for easy carrying and storing. Four of the utensils have nonstick interiors, making the clean-up job quicker, and the outing more fun. As most of these new products were shown to the buyers for the first time this week, they are not presently available. Some of them will be in the stores in a few weeks, and all of them should be available by late summer or early fall. oCet A esCeatn 1AA ines BAKING? The Rameys and Aliens beamed back and Dr. Amerine let it be known that he was well pleased. The only damper on the joy as the corks popped was the thought that it will take a few years to build up production. There is not enough Ramey champagne to meet the anticipated demand this year. But the- future looks bright for Illinois champagne, available next month.

The winery complex was christened "Foster Junction" at the grand opening, in honor of the Illinois Central railroad executive who helped the owners obtain two old railway stations for winery, laboratory, and tasting rooms, and who ft toaster which you can service yourself I The toaster has five components and the percolator has seven components, any of which can be replaced by snapping off the old part and snapping in the new part.
