Alloona Mirror. Wednesday. Julv 21, 1985 Page C9 Syndicated newspaper columns published in braille A recent addition to the hundreds of weekly publications available throughout the country has caught the "fingers" of people who are blind and read braille. "Syndicated Columnists Weekly" made its debut in August of 1983 with an issue of 24 pages. Published by the National Braille Press in Boston.

SCW presents a breadth of opinion which people who are sighted take for granted. Syndicated columnists such as Jack Anderson. Art Buchwald. Ann Landers. Erma Bombeck.

Ellen Goodman and David Broder appear on a regular basis. Sports are covered by Jack Craig and Leigh Montville from the Boston Globe. The "Review and Outlook" column from the Wall Street Journal adds greatly to the format of SCW. We are proud to announce our column. began in SCW this past month.

The idea for this publication came from a Braille reader who expressed the need for more editorials. Diane Croft, information service manager for the National Braille Press, comments. "News is covered daily on radio and tele- vision, but a perspective is more elusive." We passed on a copy of SCW to a friend. Joseph Perry, who is blind and has been a rehabilitation teacher for the Pennsylvania Bureau of Blindness and Visual Services lor 33 years. Joe leaches Braille, typing and daily living skills.

He commented that he would be subscribing to SCW in order to be aware of the various viewpoints of our society as presented by the writers. SCW is transcribed in Jiffy- Braille, computerised process bypasses the National Braille Press proofreading department. This process allows SCW to be distributed within two days of the regular release dale of some columns. The Life magazine format of approximately 30 pages allows readers to carry SCW in the same manner as a newspaper. If you are a reader who is sighted and know a person who reads braille, please puss on the word about Syndicated Columnists Weekly.

When they go through the microfilm of our existence will they just see the crime, the violent behavior, the dishonesty and the mistakes, or will they dig deeper and resurrect (he decency that existed in great numbers? Will they duly record all the drunli drivers, or will they note that nearly every citizen stops for a red light? It can be three in the morning and there won't be another car within SO miles of that intersection, and yet most people will stop dead and wail for the light to change. They don't even know why they do it. Will they know only of the jaywalkers and lawbreakers, or will they reflect on nearly every American-who stops and looks both ways on a one-way street? The clippings will reveal a civilization that was rude, arrogant and considered "Miss Manners" a writer of fiction. Yet how many people do you know who consistently say "thank you" to Erma Bombeck At Wit's End a recording and rarely hang up before the recording is finished? Oh sure, there is an abundance of crime, but there's an entire generation of people out who sleep every nighl with the tag from a pillow in their noses. It is there only because it is printed that lo remove it is unlawful.

Who's to check? A pillow inspector who visits your home and demands to see your labels? Basically, we are an orderly people who fold up a road map after we've read it. even if it takes three days. We return chairs under (he table when we leave a restaurant. And to this day I will not waste air in a restroom dryer that blows on your hands, but will keep my hands under it until it shuts off.
