Jergensen said most of the FM station equipment will bo moved from WLOS faculties oa Macon Avenue to WISE headquarters on Lookout Road.

Tat FM transmitter on Ptagah Mountain will remain. Jergensen said Bask Media' recent sale of the AshowLUe Interconnect i telephone company helped to make way for the purchase of WLOS-FM. "We needed to make room for expansion of the radio office and staff," be said, "and I wanted the opportunity to look over the radio operation better." Baste Media also owns the Phone America discount long distance telephone service in Ashe- vUle. Jergensen purchased WISE in 1970 for $900,000. Broadcasting pioneer Harold Thorns opened WISE radio in 1K.

Since then, it has changed hands several times. By DAVID NIVENS Basinest Editor WISE Radio in Asheville has purchased WLOS-FM from Wo-metco Enterprises Inc. of Miami, Kla. for 91.75 million in cash, Wo-metco and WISE officials announced Thursday. "Easy listening" format, WLOS, which can be heard in six Southeastern states, was the only radio station Wometco owned.

Wometco also owns LOS-TV in Ashevilie. It had held the radio station since 1957. The radio and television stations serve what broadcasters call the Asheville-Greenville-Spartanburg market. "This gives us an opportunity to become a powerful force in the media in the area," said Norman Eric "Rick" Jergensen, owner of AM station WISE and the major investor in the purchase of WLOS. Jergensen said changes in WLOS would be "minor at first." He said he expected the station to air under new management in 60 The sale of the station is subject to FCC approval.

"We will have to change the call letters, but they will not be WISE," he said. "That would create too much confusion." Basic Media of which Jergenson is sole owner, purchased ISO percent of WLOS through a company called WISE Inc. The remaining shares were purchased by investors through WISE Radio Inc. Basic Media owns WISE radio. "To get the cash we needed, we had to get investors," Jte added.

Jergensen said he will be general manager of both radio stations. He said it was too soon to comment on any personnel changes the new ownership would bring. WLOS is highly automated and so employs only nine persons, Jergensen said. Wometco executives said the pending change in ownership of Wometco forced the sale of the cation Commission regulations do not permit cross-ownership of a radio station and television staion in same market Wometco purchased the two stations before the current regulations applied to broadcasters. "The sale of the station has been made necessary by the impending acquisition of Wometco Enterprises Inc.

by a group of In- vestors headed by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts Co," William R. Bra Kill, Wometco senior vice president In charge of broadcasting, said In a press release. Kohlberg Kravis has offered 1842 million for Wometco. The purchase gives WISE a highly-prized AM-FM broadcasting combination in Asheville and an expanded market. -i.

"The economies of scale In this type of combination are dramatic," Jergensen said. "Our equipment Is already stereo so we do not have to upgrade for the FM." WISE recently changed, its By SONDKA J.
