10B- -Tha Burlington Vt.) Free Press, Thursday, March 2, 1989 Sanders: Chioffi is 'nasty' By Bridget Barry and Lisa Scagliotti Free Press Staff Writers Mayor Bernard Sanders Wednesday criticized Democratic mayoral candidate Nancy Chioffi for running a negative campaign, a charge Chioffi denied. Chioffi also blamed the news media for not covering the issues of the campaign, particularly drugs. Compared to his 1987 bid for re-election against Democrat Paul Lafayette, Sanders said this race has taken on a negative tone. "In all fairness to Paul Nancy is getting a little nasty," Sanders said. By attacking independent Peter Clavelle Sanders' choice in the race Sanders said Chioffi is losing sight of the broader issue.

"Nancy has not really given the people of Burlington a reason to turn their backs on Progressive government or to say we're moving in the wrong direction," he said. Sanders said he believes the consequences of a Chioffi victory are clear. "If Peter does not win, we will go back to the way the city used to be run," he said. Chioffi disagreed. "As a Democrat, I want to make it very clear that progressiveness is not the sole jurisdiction of the Progressives," she said.

Sanders cited Chioffi's stands against inclusionary zoning a proposal requiring that affordable units be built as part of any hous ing development and home rule allowing individual communities to levy their own taxes as two positions in greatest conflict with the core of Progressive government. Despite Sanders' remarks, Chioffi said her campaign is gaining momentum.

"I believe we have a very good chance to win this election," she said, basing her conclusion on nightly campaign telephone calls to voters and door-to-door efforts in the Old North End. All registered voters also will receive mail from her campaign this week, she said. Chioffi and the news media were not the only ones on the receiving end of campaign criticism Wednesday. The head of General Electric's employee union, Local 248 of the International Union of Electrical Workers, angered union members when he stumped for Clavelle. Dick Sanville campaigned with Clavelle across the street from the Lakeside Avenue plant early Wednesday.

The union's vice president, Roger Dow, said the union does not get involved with local politics and Sanville should not imply IUE's support for Clavelle. "If Sanville wants to back Cla velle as a private citizen, not as a Local 248 IUE member, fine," Dow said. Sanville said he told Clavelle he was standing with him solely as a taxpayer. "I am backing Mr. Clavelle for what I think he can do for the city," Sanville said.

"It has nothing to do with my job and it has nothing to do with this union." In a letter hand-delivered to The Burlington Free Press, GE employee Jerry Thibault said he was upset with both Sanville and Clavelle for campaigning outside the plant because Clavelle supports a reduction in military weaponry produced at General Electric and even future conversion of the plant to non-military production. The plant manufactures rapid-firing guns for the Defense Department. for (Sanville) to stand side-by-side and hand out fliers of a candidate who wishes that our plant and jobs did not even exist, is just more than I can stomach," Thibault said.
