Milton Accepts Federal Plan To Start Water Improvements SfTSUMdtd0M' BANK IS COMING! Milton residents on the town water system. Users of the system have remained under orders to boil water used for drinking and cooking since last summer. There are 489 residential units connected to the town water system, housing about 24 percent of Milton's population, in addition to schools and businesses, according to officials. Duff said selectmen will meet with FmHA officials Friday to formalize, the board's request for the grant and submit an application. He said town officials will meet within two weeks to consider sites for the pumping station and the treatment plant.

24-Hour Automatic Teller System rowhead Lake for a small pumping Voters approved a $1.2 million bond issue last November to finance the first phase of the project, construction of a water treatment plant. The second phase wquld provide a supplemental water supply. The final stage calls for improved distribution. Officials have said the last phase could be completed over several years with outdated waterlines repaired or replaced as needed. Some repairs were made where necessary during installation of new sewer lines, according to officials.

Duff said the increased grant from FmHA added to a $500,000 grant from the state Water Resources Department gives the town $900,000 over its bond issue for a total of $2.1 million in water improvement funds. He said the town hopes to receive $150,000 more from the Water Resources Department. The town manager said another boil-water notice mandated by the Health Department has gone out to By KATHY STEBBINS Free Press Correspondent MILTON Selectmen have voted unanimously to accept a federal proposal to start the first two parts of the town water improvement project using additional grant money. Town Manager Thomas Duff said the Farmers Home Administration has set aside $400,000 for Milton if the town will develop a supplemental water source. Federal officials had awarded Milton $200,000, but believe Milton Pond, the present water source, could prove insufficient, Duff said.

Selectmen agreed to go along with recommendations to use Arrowhead Mountain Lake as a supplemental water supply. Officials are looking at sites for the new water treatment plant and a pumping station, Duff said. Duff said the town must acquire approximately one acre near the McGrath Reservoir off Westford Road for the treatment facility and will need a lot adjacent to Ar tew Essex Policeman Faces Charges Of Conduct Unbecoming Officer i mm i At IV i 1 declined comment Friday. One version of the incident is that Bush's arms were full and when nobody responded to a knock on the door he shoved his shoulder into the door, popping the lock. Ryan said Bush could be dismissed or suspended for up to 60 days.

Bush, steward for the police union, worked a year for Colchester Police before he was hired three years ago by Essex Junction village. The village policemen accepted jobs with the new town department six months ago when the village force was disbanded. Charges of conduct unbecoming an officer have been filed against Essex Patrolman Robert Bush by Town Manager Kevin D. Ryan for allegedly kicking in a locked door at the rear of the police station this week. Ryan said a hearing is set for 4:30 p.m.

Wednesday before the Board of Selectmen, but Bush has the option to have the case heard in Vermont District Court if he tells town officials by Tuesday. Ryan said the incident occurred at 6:40 a.m. Tuesday and had been reported to Chief John Terry by Detective Sgt. Robbie Yandow. Bove, 43, a former alderman, said Friday he will be a candidate for the Democratic nomination for mayor at the party's citywide caucus Monday at City Hall.

Bove, a Fire Commission member, said he was unhappy with Mayor Gordon Paquette, also a Democratic candidate, for proposing a 65-cent tax increase last week. "Why didn't he start way back and go one step at a time" with the tax increases, Bove asked. Bove made national news last August when he said he planned to vote for an open Democratic con vention, even though he was committed as a delegate to President Carter. He eventually voted for Carter's renomination after Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy withdrew his name from consideration.

Bove said he believes Paquette is "a heck of a nice guy, but he's been there a long time." The mayor 'is seeking a sixth, two-year term. "Anybody can be nominated," Bove said. "Possibly someone else could get the nod." Bove, who lives at 16 Case Parkway, is a partner in Bove's Restaurant on Pearl Street. Save 180. Decorator Sofa, Kroehler Traditional.

BELVIDERE The Arthur Tanner residence off Vermont 9 was extensively damaged by a noontime fire Friday, officials said. Johnson Fire Chief Gordon C. Smith said the fire started in a wall near the chimney and spread through the upstairs of the two-story wood frame structure. A teacher at the Belvidere Elementary School, which is across Rattling Brook from the home, spotted the fire and called the Lamoille County Dispatch Center on the 911-emergency phone line, officials said.

Firemen from Cambridge and Hyde Park were called in to assist, a dispatch spokesman said. "Mutal aid has been working great, especially these last few days," Smith said. It was the sixth fire call for the Johnson Volunteer Fire Department since Tuesday, he said. tin $519. Queen Sleeper Sofa.
