iLE S1 LETTER FROM TEXAS I Temple Texas July 27 1906 To the Editor Ocala Banner I have had the pleasure of reading two or three numbers of your valuable paper through the courtesy of avery kind friend I have near Fairfield who isa reader of the Banner I have been very much interested in the general reports from the different sections of your county and I am almost persuaded sometimes to think that Marion county would be a good place to live Of course you are aware that Texas possesses more real attractions for the agriculturist horticulturist and 1A A the fact is that Texas comes very near being a turtle in so far that she has a great variety of soils and climates Theer are many attractions in Florida personal and otherwise that I makes your journal very interesting reading I read in a recent number of your paper that in the coast country of Texas that they had no rain since last February up to the date of that issue which wa recent Possibly you were mistaken in your information One from our office recently made a visit to the coast country around Brownsville and just returned bringing some of the products of that country and a general reportTof the coun 0 try He informs us that the cotton in that country will yield a bale and I onehalf to the acre and that the corn has been gathered makng about forty bushels per acre ribbon cane is exceedingly fine the onion crop has been gathered and the yield was very fine I fineThe The boll weevil nor the worm have done but little or no damage to the crop thus far The corn yield is exceptionally fine The fruit crop of Texas is far below an average The acreage of cotton in Texas is about the average and the farmers are going to hold for ten cents The city of Ten ple has a population of about 12000 and her schools and churches cannot be excelled ill the United States I beg to call your attention to these facts in comparison with Marion county the Belle of Florida Respectfully HANNA The End of the World of troubles that COUNTRY Special Correspondence The construction of towns and the expansion of Floridas commercial centers is heralded around in big red and black headlines by the papers of the city the paving of streets and avenues the construction of gas and electric plants the dredging of channels across bars these are all daily talked and written of by press and people but the happenings in fields and forests remote from our cities where the tilling of the soil and the felling of the forests are carried on and also where the euectric harness is adjusted to the swift crystal streams with which to produce and transport to our cities to make them grow all this seems to move to the front with such little comment that only a very few at times only those who are connected with the work know of the great things which are carried on to erect our busy pretty and modern Florida cities Were it not for the screeching blasts of the pullboat whistle which daily rend the air in Silver Springs run few of us would know of the I great work that is being done up in that remote section The Wilson Cypress Companys pullboat No 3 which is stationed within one mile of Delks Bluff Is do ing a large business incidentally for a pleasure trip Those who have not had the opportunity of seeing a logboat pull logs cannot imagine the strength of the swamp giant It is indeed a giant and it tears the swamp in twain when two or three sticks attached to its threequarterinch cable come in In talking with the boats popular engineer Mr Furr we learned that three sticks are generally pulled at a trip and on an average nine trips are made in a day Each stick contains three logs therefore on an average the boat win pull eightyone logs in a day These logs are floated down the Oklawaha to the Wilson Cypress
