AIU)EN Section 10 The Home Garden Annual Day lily Show to Open in Hinsdale What is A-20 Bkiegrass? We could have called it Devonshire, Yorkshire, or even Worcestershire, but A-20 is how our research department and universities designate it. For example, Ohio State rates A-20 "excellent" in all four categories. Fischer, one of the foremost daylily hybridizers, whose creations have won major awards in this country and abroad. Daylilies, known horticul-turally as hemerocallis and often referred to as "hems," are aptly named.

Each flower blooms for just a day, but there are new blooms to take its place each day during the flowering period, which lasts for weeks with some varieties. The plants are of such easy culture that at one time they were popularly known as the "lazy gardener's flower." They can be planted and forgotten, but they'll never forget you. Even under conditions of neglect, daylilies make a good showing. And given the benefit of occasional fertilizing and cultivation, the blooms will be superb. They deserve serious consideration, too, for those problem spots in the yard.

Tho they will do best in full sun, they can tolerate considerable shade. They also will perform equally well in moist or dry situations. A large group of daylilies on the fringe of a swamp in my yard never fails to flower gloriously at this time, altho they frequently have been under water for extended periods in the spring. These dazzling perennials, discovered by an increasing number of flower enthusiasts in recent years, have few equals when it comes to illuminating the garden scene with their glowing beauty. The daylily's rise in popularity from a mere roadside flower to one of the most respected garden subjects is almost as spectacular as the flower itself.

New colors and forms, many created by noted Chicago area hybridizers, have' been a factor, but the plant's durability, dependability, and carefree growing habit also played major role in helping it attain classical status in the horticultural world. Green thumbers looking ahead to fall planting can get acquainted with some of the outstanding varieties grown in city and suburban gardens by visiting the Third Annual Daylily show next Saturday in the Hinsdale Community 1 -lU Patterns to lit any yard. Camponnntt Flower Box- The clumps need not be divided for years, and then only when there is a noticablc deterioration of blooms. For this reason, it is always wise to prepare the soil well before setting out new clumps. Late autumn is the recommended time for planting new varieties, and for lifting and dividing old clumps.

The plants should be set with the crowns about an inch below ground level. Modern daylilies offer the gardener a range of color from light cream to yellow, primrose, pink, orchid, Vermillion, and dark red. May Hall, a new daylily created by the late David Hall of Wilmette and named for his wife, is a peach color with orchid overtones. It was awarded the Stout Medal, highest honor a daylily can receive, from the American Hemerocallis society. The society, with which the Chicagoland group is affiliated, also announced recently the results of its latest daylily popularity poll, conducted among its membership thruout the nation.

The top 25 winners, which include older favorites as well as recent creations, are: Satin Glass, Hortensia, Annie Welch, Sea Gold, May Hall, Winning Ways, Car twheels, Twenty-Third Psalm, Curls, Clarence Simon, Full Reward, Lime Painted Lady, Little Rainbow, William Munson, Lavender Flight, Ava Michelle, Little Wart, Lexington, Emperor's Robe, Angel Robes, Love That Pink, Crestwood Ann, and Pink Superior. Many of these representative named varieties will be exhibited at the Chicagoland society's show Saturday. caught in the chicken wire inside the vase. There's a fair chance now that cars can have the safety and convenience feature as the result of a new manufacturing process.

Heatablc windshields that can end outside icing and inside fogging have to have conductors to change electric current into heat. Since wires and ceramic glazes hamper visibility, they can't be used in windshields tho they are used in the rear windows of some cars. For plane windshields, a costly procedure is used: carefully laying down a thin and transparent metal film within the glass. Not only costly, tho process is too slow for mass production. A SOLUTION: A newly developed process makes it possible to put a thin metal film on the flexible vinyl sheeting which glass makers use in windshields.

The heatable vinyl innerlayer, tests indicate, can melt ice 10 times faster than a hot air defroster. Also, with a sensor, temperature of 100F can be maintained well above the temperature at which condensation and fogging occur when relative humidity gets even up to 99 per cent. There are now efforts to get car makers to use the wired windshields. About $150 would be added to the price of a car much of that for some necessary changes in the car's electrical system. Wired Windshields: The new process has been developed hi; Sierracin Corp.

Los Angdlcs which supplies electrically healed windshields for aircraft including ihe Boeing 747. racin also claims that the mciailic inferiater would be helpful another way, reflecting more than 40 per cent of non-visible solar heat. CLEAN AND BRIGHT HOW LONG? While most people know that porcelain enamel is used extensively for tubs, sinks, ranges, table tops and kitchenware, many don't know which product on the market will keep porcelain enamel made up of a thin layer of glass fused to metal clean and bright. Some abrasive cleaners powders with a gritty base can remove virtually anything, but they also scratch and-eventually remove some of the finish which Ihen dirties more quickly and is tough to clean. Some use acids, such as household bleach.

A little diluted in water is effective but strong acid can harm tho finish, experts say, and even diluted acid should be rinsed off afler denning. TIIK SAFE WAY: linking soda which is a mild alkali also a very mild abrasive is safe lo use as a cleaner. Household ammonia, particularly the slightly cloudy lype coulnining small amount of detergent or soap and Borax, is effective. Safest cleaner, experts say, is soap or detergent and water. The more often you use this for cleaning, the longer you can expect the finish on your equipment to remain bright.

42 New York, N. Y.J. BY PHYLLIS PAUTZ YOU can find stimulating ideas for flower arrangements in old flower prints and paintings. Today's arrangement is based on a nineteenth century flower painting and it's very easy to do, using five or six garden flowers of your choice and three stems of morning glory vine. For a long -lasting arrangement, condition the garden flowers overnight in water up to the flower heads.

Cut the morning glory vine in the early morning just before arranging. To make the arrangement, you'll need a tall vase stuffed with crumpled chicken wire. Add water and place the vase where the arrange-ment is to be displayed. Next curve the three lengths of morning vine, which should have many unopened buds, over the side of the vase as shown. Make sure the vine ends are firmly Protects children, Anchor gives you a beautiful liii STOCKADE 'litf I STEEL OR ALUMINUM WfP Estimates ILJJL B- Planning rlULC-Meosuring mmmmm Literature Why not buy a noma brand fenco at factory prices?
