In a session with reporters Sunday, the governor tried to be upbeat about the vice presidential selection and also decried the regionalism which threatens to divide the Democratic Party. "We need to be binding our country together," the governor said, referring to the squabble over the impact in the South of a woman on the ticket. "Ferraro will be a positive factor when people get to know her," White said.

"I think she will be well received in Texas when they get to know her." "I'm disappointed it wasn't a Texan," White said of the vice presidential selection. "But I'm overjoyed it was a woman." U.S. Rep. Solomon Ortiz of Corpus Christi said he has received substantial negative response from his constituents to the Ferraro selection. "The timing is not right," Ortiz said in an interview. "She will have to prove herself in Texas." As if the Ferraro selection were not enough, Ortiz said the appointment of Lance as the Mondale campaign director may be a serious problem for Texas Democrats.

Lance, who resigned as President Carter's budget director amid a controversy over his banking practices, is "excess baggage" for Mondale in Texas, Ortiz believes. Others in the Texas delegation, however, argue that the selection of Lance and the ouster of Manatt may not seriously damage the Mondale campaign in the state. The former vice president found a campaign "technician" in Lance, said Ann Richards, state treasurer. Despite the reservations some Texans have about the selection of Lance, Richards noted that he is a "known factor" in political fundraising and campaign circles.
