6A Wednesday, November 13, 1991 Business jKknttUo Hutltr (Fiiitrn r—Business briefs I ,js^^^iMjte« BILL ZACHARY ComputerLand staffer earns certification • KERRVILLE — Bill Zachary, service manager at Com- puterLand of Kerrville, has been designated a Certified Network Engineer by Novell, Inc. Two weeks of training in Salt Lake City and successful completion of seven examinations were required to attain the CNE designation. Novell is one of the industry leaders in networking of personal computers. Schwethelm elected to real estate panel • COMFORT — A.C. Schwethelm, CRE, president of A.C. Schwethelm and Associates, Inc. in Comfort has been rc-clcctcd to serve a two-year term on the board of governors of the American Society of Real Estate Counselors. The election took place at the Tropicana Hotel in Las Vegas on Nov. 6 during the group's annual convention. Schwelhelm's professional activities include serving on a county tax appraisal board and on a slate appeals board. He currently serves on the technical advisory committee to the State Comptroller of Public Accounts. In addition, his other professional affiliations include service on the NAR Resolution Trust Corporation tusk force and as the society's representative on the National Association of Realtors legislative committee and the federal taxation subcommittee. Daily Times seeks local business news • KERRVILLE — The Kerrville Doily Times is encouraging local businesses to submit news items such as staff promotions, new employees, awards received and any other items of interest to area readers. Suggestions for stories on innovative aspects of a business will also be considered. Investment strategies vary among mutuals Q. I have been watching two mutual funds and I am trying to decide which to buy. Both funds are tax-free municipal bond funds. One pays 6.5 percent Interest and the other pays just over 7.5 percent. Obviously, the 7.5 percent yield looks more attractive but I am wondering why there Is so much difference? A. While both of these funds arc tax-free municipal funds Ihcy arc funds with different investment philosophies. The 6.5 percent tax- free fund invests in BAA to AAA rated bonds. Bond with ratings arc considered of investment grade. This is a conservative fund, possibly worthy of a larger portion of one's net worth for Tim Lidiak, INVESTMENT CORNER income. The 7.5 percent fund invests in lower grade municipal bonds. The bonds arc picked by the fund's manager to maximize yield. This fund should be considered less conservative than the 6.5 percent fund. This docs not, of course, mean that the 7.5 percent fund will perform poorly compared to the more conservative fund. It just means that the bonds in the portfolio are of lesser perceived quality. Either or both of these funds may have a place in a personal investment portfolio. It is not a question of one being better than the pthcrc—it is just a matter of understanding the investment goals of the fund and fitting it to your personal needs. Q. I have been thinking about investing a little money In the junk bond market. I feel that If the economy Improves these bonds will also. I have run across abond I don't understand. What is a reset bond? A. Reset bonds are bonds that on prc-set dates will have its coupon interest rate reset to force the bond to trade at par value. For example, a 1 3 percent bond trading at 96 might have to have the coupon rate reset to 14V> to make the bond trade at 100. Reset bonds arc usually issued as a part of a leveraged buyout financing. The reset feature protects the lender from a drop in bond price caused by a degradation of credit worthiness. Tim Lidiak )• * e»rtlll«d llninelnl ptannw.
