ir Hero of Alaniein, Alexander, 77; Dies United Press International LONDON (UPI) — Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis, who drove Rommel's Afrika Korps out of North • Africa and joined Gen. Dwight « D. Eisenhower in the destruc- . lion of Nazi Germany, died today. He was 77. The mustaschioed British soldier, called "Alex" by Eisenhower and his other com: -.vades. also directed the ve- J -"organization of British arms • '-as minister of defense after ' "World War II. His greatest moment came in 1942. when Prime Minister Winston Churchill sent him. aided by Field Marshal Viscount Bernard Law Mont. gomery. to wipe out the Af; rika Korps. Directing Montgomery and . the British Eighth Army. Al• exander was the strategic •• boss in the battle of El Ale; mein in which Rommel's v forces were destroyed in one £' of the war's decisive mo £ ments. • Montgomery took the spot? light, the subordinate with a i. flair for publicity. Alexander stayed in the background, a commander with almost a passion for anonymity. Later Alexander. Eisenhower's deputy in the invasion of Italy, became allied commander in the Mediterranean theater of operations, freeing "Tke" for the Normandy invasion of 1944. He remained one of Eisenhower's closest British friends, organizing private parties for their wartime comrades when Ike came to Britain. Less than a week ago. Alexander, who also served as governor general of Canada, attended the opening of a new Canadian hotel in London. He waved at the workmen who recognized and cheered him. It was the last hurrah for Alex. •^— rn6— — CARPET PLACE £ Warehouse burned j amid sniping at Cairo] £ CAIRO. 111.
