Volume rose more than a mi lion shares above the previou day's total, reaching 5.16 millioi shares. Motors, steels, aluminums, an other industrials paced the ad vance. General Motors, again lendin Inspiration to its group and to other representatives of allied In dustries, advanced 2^ to 7314, th highest price it has ever reached Chrysler recovered 2%. U.S. Steel rose 1%. Gains ex ceeding a point were made also by Jones & Laughlin, Youngstown Sheet and Inland Steel. The report that the steel industry will enter labor negotiations without a fixed strike deadline was interpreted by investors as favorable to their profit outlook. Of 1,333 issues traded, 717 ad vanced and 353 declined. New highs for the year totaled 111 and new lows 12. The Associated Press average of 60 stocks rose 1.3 to 270.8, with industrials up 3.1, rails up 1.0, and utilities off .6. American Photocopy, still responding to news of a licensing agreement with Xerox, rose % to 12%. More interest in rail mergers was sparked by an unconfirmed Sugar Futures ^ NEW YORK (AP)—Domestic sugar futures No. 7 closed 5 to 17 higher. IBM rose 9%, Xerox 6, Polaroid 2%, Texas Instruments 2, General Precision 2%, Litton Industries 1%, Montgomery Ward 2^, General Electric 1%, du Pont 2%, Texaco l'/J, Liggett & Myers % and Radio Corp. 2 1 /i. Prices on the American Stock Exchange advanced on volume of 1.06 million shares. Corporate bonds and U.S. Government bonds were steady to a shade weaker. Trading was moderate.
