CHEMI Editor, The American Philatelist Weather and water, both important factors to life on earth, are the design themes for spacial stamps to be issued by Australia and Canada. Australia is participating in World Weather Watch, a project of the United Nations, and it has 5- and 20-cents stamps to com memo- rate this major step in international cooperation t o learn more about the development of storms before they strike. Chemi The United Nations postal administration in New York City also has indicated that it will release special adhesives to publicize the weather cooperation project. The nation's oldest stamp collectors' society has arranged to use weather as the theme for its 82nd annual exhibition. Canada's participation in the UNESCO-sponsored International Hydrological Decade will receive a postal tribute May 8 when the Canadian Post Office releases a 5-cent stamp in large format featuring a weighing rain gauge. THE GAUGE depicted in the design is similar to those used throughout the world by meteorologists to record the rate of precipitation. The sun's radiating rays are shown in the upper left corner of the vignette created by Prof. Imre von Mosdossy, who makes his debut as a Canadian stamp designer. Prof. Mosdossy is versed in varied fields of art and design. He has created hundreds of stamp designs, but the May 8 release is his first since settling in Ontario. The important Danish port of Esbjerg, on the North Sea coast in the southwest portion of Jutland peninsula, is the subject of a 30-ore adhesive due April 24. The stamp will commemorate the centenary of the Esbjerg Harbor Act. Artist Mads Stage's design shows a view of ships' masts rising above the harbor's docks. Phoenix, Sunday, March 31,19«S The ArifOrtfl Republic B-S AP Wlrephoto HONOR HENRY FORD — This is the design of the 12-cent Henry Ford stamp that will be issued July 30 at Greenfield Village, Mich. The stamp features a portrait of Ford superinmposed on a silhouette of a 1909 Model T touring car. WEATHER SATELLITES — U.S., Russia and Australia have World Weather Watch stations where satellites in space are to flash meteorological data to earth. Australia has issued two stamps to pay tribute to this international cooperation to more accurately forecast world's, weather. Left stamp depicts a typical weather; map, while 5-cent denomination shows space satellite transmitting signals to Melbourne station. WHILE SOME of the newer African nations are still lax in their game protection laws, most of the so-called French Community countries on the African continent have turned to tiny postage stamps to convey their conservation of wildlife messages. Dahomey, once a German and then a French colonial territory, is proud of her game reserve at Pendjari, and the republic's post office has issued a six-stamp multicolored set showing wild animals in their natural habi- tats. Depicted irt the colorful series are the water buffalo, lion, impala, crocodile and hippopotamus. # * * THE TWIN space stamps, issued Sept. 29, 1967, at the Kennedy Space Center, Fla., have been named the "best design" among the U.S. stamps issued last year. The annual collectors' poll is conducted by Carl P. Rueth of Sidney, Ohio, editor-publisher of Linn's Weekly Stamp News. The two 5-cent stamps showed a space-walking astronaut connected to his space vehicle by a lifeline. A vertical perforation cut through the lifeline to create two separate stamps. THE ENLARGED version of the Hans Memling painting, "Madonna and Child with Angels," used on the 1967 Christmas season stamp, was voted the second best design, with the magnolia flower on the Mississippi Statehood stamp ranked third. The "Design Derby" participants labeled the Urban Planning commemorative as the "least necessary" stamp issued during 1967, while the .--.•• 5-cent adhesive to commemorate the 150th anniversary of , the birth of Henry David Tho-- reau was tagged the year's "worst design." the PHOENIX S TAMP HOP Got a lot of I stamps Vstuff See'emat318E.Camelback Phone 379-2391 Mon.
