14 Urt Afittrftfl Republic t May 1,1811 Forest Service Ready to Fight Fires Drying Wittds^ Approaching Vacation Season- Bring JJanger % CLArtOftNE NtJCfCOLLS PRESCOTT — Preparatirms i*e being made here to cope promptly and adequately with iny eventuality the close - at- hand fire season may bring tn the 1.023.000-acr* Prescott National Forest. The forest service slurry de- |»t (slurry is the common name for liquid fire retardant chemi- tfals with which tanker planes 'IxflYib" forest, fires) and two talkers are being placed in readiness for takeoff* at any time. One ship has a capacity of 5,000 gallons of slurry and the ether, 1,200 gallons. The bigger ship is a converted P4Y Privateer and the smaller, a B20. Both are provided on a standby basis by Flight Enterprises Inc.. of Prescott. They were converted for fire fighting use at the Prescott Airport plant of Aero Mechanics Inc., whose tankers are used on a number of other national forests. The two firms are affiliated. Ken Norman, assistant supervisor of the Prescott who doubles as fire control officer, an nounced that. Howard Mays. veteran forest service pilot, has been reassigned here for anotJv er season. Mays pilots a TM "lead plane," from which tajik- «r operations are directed. Already, forest lookout towers are manned on * part time basis, and the regular firefighter camps have been reactivated on a limited scale. They can be fully activated at any time conditions warrant. A late-April storm, which in some areas dropped upward of an Inch of precipitation, pretty w.ell dampened the forest and net back the critical period somewhat, officials said. However, there have been some drying winds since then, and by June, when thousands of campers and vacationists begin ID flock into forest recreational areas, Uiey anticipate the fire danger, barring unexpected rains, which will be high. Normally, summer rains don't be- jpn until July. Last summer was a lucky season on the Prescott. Norman recalls. Although ground crews and the aerial tankers were kept on tile jump by lightning fires started by recurrent summer thunderstorms, it ended the season without a really major fire. Largest of the season was a fire in the remote Hell's Hole near Crown King, which burned about 15 acres before it was suppressed. BOMBER READIED—Ken Norman, fire control officer for Prescott Na Nona!
