It's true that the individual citizen can't do much about the general problem of pollution of the outside air except write and complain to Congressmen and government officials, but a growing number of persons have decided to Solve the air pollution problem, in their homes at least, by installation of electronic air filters. These devices remove from the air inside the home a very high percentage of the airborne dust, smoke and other particles which pollute the air in and around nearly all our cities. And by doing this, they make the home cleaner, healthier and more pleasant. The sheer physical facts of the pollution of our air are staggering. It has been estimated, for example, that 71 tons of soot settle over each square mile of Chicago in a month. For Manhattan, the figure has been estimated at 103 tons. Another estimate is that a cubic mile of air over Detroit contains about 1,400 pounds of suspended solids. And there may be as many as 30 million suspended particles in each cubic foot of air we breathe. Tips on filters Filters are either permanent or replaceable. The permanent ones can be taken out, cleaned, and put back. The others must be replaced ft* new ones. The manufacturer's instructions will tell you how often the filter should be either cleaned or replaced. Remember that a clean filter is most efficient, and that one clogged with dirt will reduce intake of air. Service requirements. Room air conditioners are ^igned for dependable oper- on, season after season, a minimum of servicing. -.-Jly all that is needed is a periodic cleaning of the chassis and oiling of the fan motor. It's a good policy to have this done each year. A service man can do it and, at the same time, check the unit and installation. Air pollution is increasing, and the U.S. Public Health Service has said that in extreme cases it can make people cry, sneeze, cough, and perhaps have long-term effects on health. All this means that keeping the air clean inside a home is no easy task. A central refrigeration air conditioning system will through normal filtration remove many of the particles from the air, but they are not as efficient as electronic air filters which can take out of the air up to about 95 per cent of the dust The latter will also remove the same or higher proportions of pollens and trap small tobacco smoke particles. Electronic air filters work on the principle of electrostatic precipitation. Particles in the air are given a high voltage charge as they enter the air cleaner, then oppositely charged collecting plates attract the charged particles. The charged particles remain on the collecting plates until they are washed away. Employing electronic air filters to keep the air clean may be only a partial solution to the over-all problem of air pollution, but it is an important and worthwhile forward step in home comfort and well-being.
