Edgewood 482-3368 Planners Plan Compromise CAB, Chamber In Disagreement At Public Hearing Continued from page I contended that It did not get sufficient opportunity to make suggestions when the CAB s recommendations were being formulated. The CAB. on the other hand, argues that the business community did get sufficient opportunity through the surveys which It sent out and the public workshops It held last fall. The CAB and the Chamber arc most divided on the question of free standing signs. Tne business community has argued that they 12,000 VITRIFIED CHINA MUGS - IF PERFECT REG. $2.50 EA. Heard pointed out that merchants In such communities as Honolulu, Hawaii and Clear Lake City tend to use store front signs more frequently than free stand- Ing signs. To encourage the trend toward building front signs, the CAB has proposed higher permit fees on free standing signs. The Chamber feels there should be no fees at all. If any fees arc to be Imposed, Atchcson argued In a letter submitted to the planning and zoning commission, "they must be reasonable." The CAB and the Chamber also disagree on the size, height and setback of free standing signs. The CAB feels that free standing signs should be no larger than 50 squre feet In area. The Chamber believes signs up to 60 square feet should be permitted for effective advertising. The CAB has recommended that signs be no higher than 25 feet off the ground. The chamber feels that a height of 35 feet should be allowed. The CAB thinks that signs should be placed 20 feet from the curb. But the Chamber has recommended an Inset of ten feet, "provlded no part of the sign overhangs the right of way." Both the Chamber and the CAB have Indicated they could accept some modifications of their proposals. However, both sides Indicated they would oppose a sign ordinance that was In wide variance to their recommendations. f* ^"%* ^ Suggestions W 1* A^VA^ Imperial RMt Giglanctef SPECIAL PURCHASE • ON QUALITY BEDDING ALL S/ZES/N STOCK RECLINERS BIG MAN SIZES AVAILABLE We Suggest: •TELEVISIONS -STEREOS -MICROWAVE OVENS •PICTURES AND ACCESSORIES Free Delivery in Alvin area & Set Up FURNITURE AND APPLIANCE HIGHLAND SQUARE MALL CENTER
