SL- A KITCHEN MAID/ r Use doors for extra storage Be sure jamb depth has sufficient clearance i-DOUBLt MTV DOOK: TOR STOM^f-AID S-MSST Am TOR MOTETS,' Furnish your patio for comfort You certainly don't need a decorator when you build and furnish a patio, but a little planning will make outdoor living a lot more enjoyable. One way is to vary your approach to patio furnishings according to the stage of home ownership your family iff in. Common stages are: young married couples without children; families with infants or toddlers; families with children of elementary school age; families with teenagers; and older couples whose children have left home. "WHATEVER STAGE you are in, it's important to see that there is sufficient shade available on the patio to keep it comfortable all day long, when you install a patio cover, choose the colors that will suit your home's appearance best. -• Young couples who expect fo raise a family shortly are Dually interested in saving money. Patio decor can be extremely informal. Beach chairs for sitting and old crates for tables will do. Couples with infants and toddlers will want to use the patio as a comfortable spot for keeping the carriage and playpen. Outdoor furniture should be comfortable for baby-sitting with washable upholstery. AS CHILDREN reach the elementary school stage, the patio and backyard becomes a vast play area. A patio storage chest for toys might not be a bad idea. Outdoor furniture should be expected to take lots of abuse. When children enter their teens, they'll want to use the patio for relaxing, studying, reading and entertaining friends. It might not be a bad idea to expand the patio and divide it into formal and in- formal area with the informal area set aside for dancing and record playing. This may be the most satisfying stage of all. With just the two of you, there will be more time for breakfast on the patio and that drink be- fore dinner. Furniture can be as decorative as you like to impress the women's club when it comes for tea. There might be a special table for the men's card games; a portable bar; bookcases; a hobby corner. I. IF YOU NEED extra storage space to take care of your closet overflow, try putting your doors to work. A convenient way to store your wines and liquors and create a bar at the same time is to use the double door and folding shelf shown at left. Attach a full- length dressing mirror to the back of the door for elegance and to increase the illusion of space. Your local handy man will find this simple to install. If you attempt it yourself, however, remember to measure the depth of your door jamb, to assure sufficient clearance, and attach the unit to the thickest parts of the door, not to the thin panels. The dressing table shown in the small sketch is made of a metal flower box so your bottles won't spill. Mount the small stool on casters so it will easily slip into the closet, and decorate to,suit. 2. HAVE YOUR cleaning equipment on file and within easy reach by attaching them to the kitchen door. The upper shelf holds soap and cleaning supplies while the notched wood strip below keeps your mops in good order. Or you can use the metal clip- type mop hangers. 3. A TOY BIN for junior's closet door will help promote neatness. Dowels across the front hold toys in place but allow the child to pick one easily. Nail a slate or pin-up board above it for his art work. Phoenix, Sunday, Jnn« 15, 19«9 The Arizona Republic K-13 Take precautions to guard vacant home If you leave your home unoccupied for a period of time while you see how a new job or promotion works out, here are some precautions to take to safeguard its value. Many families prefer to hold on to their home until they are satisfied with their move. First check with your insurance company to see if your homeowners' policy covers you when the house is left vacant. You may have to arrange for a special policy. Next, notify the police that the house will be empty. They will add it to their regular rounds. Enlist the aid of neighbors on either side to look out for unauthorized visitors. Keep the house and grounds up-to-par in your absence by arranging with someone to mow the lawn or rake up leaves. WOODMARK HOMES 33rd St. ft Desert Cove (1 Block North of Shw on Mnd It.)
