Eller, Jeweler Present "A Trip Around The World" Welterweight Champion Defends Crown Tonight SYRACUSE, N. Y. — (UP) — Confident, superbly-conditioned Tony DeMarco will make his first defense of the welterweight crown tonight against favored, grimly-determined Carmen Basilio in their sold-out fight at War Memorial auditorium. t 'Tm sharper and faster for this ight than for any other," said the sturdy, black-haired champion, who arrived last night from his training camp at Monticello, N. Y., "and I expect to win." But the odds favoring rengy, brown-haired Basilio of nearby Canastota, N. Y., lengthened today to 2-1 over the 23-year-old titleholder from Boston. Whether DeMarco wins or loses in their nationally-televised and broadcast 15-roundcr, the son of a Boston shoemaker will earn about $62,000. Uasilio, 28-year-old son of a nearby onion farmer, should get about $31,000. This "dream fight" between two able and very aggressive hookers was sold out completely in less than 24 hours after the tickets were offered. The 9,100 seats in the auditorium bring a gross gate of $177,000. DeMarco and Basilio, both converted southpaws and both "quick bleeders" early in their careers, will square off at 8 p.m. cst, and Ihrir battle will be televised and broadcast nationally over NBC for a $50,000 fee. De Marco is making his first defense of the 147-pound crown he won by stopping Johnny Saxton at Boston in the 14th round, April 1. o Hurler Joe Black Saved From Minors By Injured Player BROOKLYN — tUP) — Pitcher Joe Black of the Dodgers was saved from the minors today by a broken bone in another man's wrist. Black was traded to Cincinnati yesterday for about $15,000 in ca&h and a minor league player to be delivered later to one of the Dodgers farms. The Redlegs, already desperate for pitching, decided to gamble on Brooklyn's hero of the 1952 campaign, when they learned that Bud Podbielan, a strating hurler, had smashed a small bone in the wrist of his pitching hand TEXAS LEAGUE Team— Dallas . Black had' been up for sale for some time but nobody had made a satisfactory offer for him until General Manager Gabe Paul of the Redlegs closed the deal. The Negro right hander from Plainfield, N. J., won 15 games and lost only four in 1952 and won rookie of the year honors for his standout relief work which was a big factor in Brooklyn's successful pennant drive. But the batters began to catch on to Black's cunning and in 1953 his record dwindled to, 6-3. In 1954 things became worse and after failing to win a game with the Dodgers he was sent back to the minors. For a time this spring it looked as if he might regain his former effectiveness. In his first appearance against the Phillies he pitched five-hit ball 'for 6% innings-to gain the decision. In his 'next two outings he pitched a total of five innings and gave up no runs. Thereafter, however, he was hit hard and after three more relief jobs saw no action. Usual age for marriage in Britain is 19-25 for women, 21-30 for men. Saturday, June 11th. 9 A.M. to 9P.M.
