B4 The TIMES-REPORTER W«d.. July 31,1974 OOVCfl-NEW PHILADELPHIA, OHIO Marriageable females come wifh high price REVERSIBLE COAT AND SCARF By IHIe Wacs WARMTH WITHOUT WEIGHT By L. Goldstein BylVANSTEFANOVIC Associated Press Writer OOST1VAR: Yugoslavia - Djemal Eyupi, a laborer In this city, worked hard to save enough money to buy a wife. Me reached his goal. They married. Then she ran off — with the money. In many villages and towns in Macedonia girls are heavily outnumbered by men and consequently at a premium. Although the Yugoslav penal code forbids the sale of brides through dowries, marriageable girls in (hese communities carry heavy prices on their heads. Kadri Biljali, 23, gave his prospective father-in-law a $1750 down payment on his 15- year-old daughter. To complete the marriage agreement he then had another $2500 to pay, half of it in gold. Inflation on the marriage market is increasingly bothering Macedonian men. One of them, Nevzat Biljali, was Quick sandwich For a quick sandwich the family will love, spread the insides of split loaves of Pita, the Armenian flat bread, with cream cheese, mayonnaise, mustard or horseradish. Then fill the pocket with slin slices of ham, roast beef, or other meat, a scoop of tossed salad or cole slaw and thin slices of black or ripe olives. It is a meal in itself. moved to complain to President Tito recently in a letter imploring his aid, "We must pay between 40,000 and 60,000 dinars ((2300 and $3800) to the girl's father to set up the wedding, "Biljali, 29, wrote from the village of Cergan, near here. "We get this money together through hard labor. Then we have to pay another 40,000 dinar sin goal, "Weareasklngyou.thedear- est friend of Albanians living in this country, to abolish this •excessive burden."Nevzat's letter found its way to the cabinet of the Macedonian state government. A spokesman pointed out that the problem of barter brides could not be. solved by legal means, as'legislation banning a practice dreading in existence. He said the cabinet had made no specific recommendations, but had urged broad- based social action and the involvement of all social and political organizations'in Macedonia to eliminate bride-buy- When you think of Cakes. . They are roomier and unconstricted for a look that's totally new. Often, coats have dropped shoulders or muffing scarves. Capes whirl, swirl and look divinely dashing. You'll see lots of mohair, often double-faced for coats and capes that reverse from plaid to plain. It's two-in-one styling that makes fashion and budget sense. Another plus: double-faced fabrics don't require linings or construction making for garments that provide warmth without weight. Lengths tend to be longer but stick with the hemline you like. There's plenty of room for choice. What to wear under these big coverups? Straight-legged pants, dresses or big skirts. At foot you'll have shoes with more feminine styling and higher heels. Hats — berets, knit caps and cloches ~ J provide the punchline and the headline for the new look. Hints from Heloise love is... . . . Heloise Cruse Dear Heloise: I read in your column about using lemon oil to clean shower doors, tiles, chrome fixtures etc. Tell me Heloise, who inspired you try such a far-out idea? Frankly, at first I thought it was a misprint. Then I decided to try it because it might be just crazy enough to work. I spent one very full day recently scrubbing shower doors, tiles and door frames with every smelly concoction imaginable and was still less than thrilled with the results. Tonight, in less than one- half hour, all the above mentioned — plus, chrome towel racks, knobs and faucets — sparkled. This was done with very little effort using your lemon oil, paper towels and a rag. To you and your inspiration, a big hug and .deepest thanks for making a nasty job easy and nice. Love You. AnnJohnston Dear Heloise: I almost threw a new pressure cooker out. But I found what I was doing wrong. Stews cooked in my old brand took 20 minutes. Being used to the old cooker, I burned everything I cooked in the new cooker, I found out what was wrong when I decided to write a letter to the manufacturer and complain. I got the book to read it and found I had been cooking with the wrong timing. Carol M. Carr Dear Folks: Did you know thai you can make brown gravy seasonings ahead of time by browning it in your oven? All you have to do is take a big heavy skillet, turn your oven on at a low temperature and put in some flour. Every so often go back to the oven and stir the flour to get all the lumps out. (Do this while you're roasting or baking.) This will remove all the moisture and soon you are going to see this flour start turning a beautiful golden brown- Let it brown until it is as dark as you desire and then remove from (he oven and store in jars. Now, the next time you make gravy, flour pork chops or chicken, use this brown flour. It's marvelous, for instance, with a pot roast, you don't even have to brown the flour, or when you make homemade gravy for good old mashed potatoes. This home-browned flour can be mixed with your water immediately and poured right in your roast pot or skillet when you're ready for the gravy. Heloise Dear Heloise: I have found it is no longer necessary to replace shower curtains because the holes at the top break through. I buy grosgrain ribbon and sew it onto the back. Stitching along the upper and lower edges of the holes gives extra support. Now make small slits in the ribbon and rehang. D. Hopkins Dear Heloise: During, the summer I go swimming a lot. When I get out of the pool my hair smells of chlorine, so I take a small bottle and fill it half with shampoo and half with creme rinse. Now I go in the shower room and wash my hair before I go home. $ Jeanie McCrea Age 13 A - I/I. . , keeping the family cool in the u>ading pool.
