«A! Ig Has Your Fiance Hired Big COMPAS Dinner ISN'T $125 aTicket... i .M>&&M$ A Defecti ive Washington Post Service TOKYQ-Since the end of the war, free choice in marriage has been constitutionally guaranteed here. The post war constitution abolished, supposedly, arranged marriages in which parents, working through an intermediary, decided upon the marriage of their sons and daughters. Today, all marriages are theoretically "love matches." In actual fact, about half of them are still arranged by the parents, though with much more consideration given to the wishes of the young people. The other half are marriages in which the two young people chose each other; but rarely is such a mtach consummated without the full parental approval. A father's frown can kill a proposal faster than philandering or gambling. So it really hasn't changed all that much. Parents still have most of the final word; moreover, the tradition of having a pre-marital investigation run on the prospective partner has gotten stronger. The parents, often have the check run but the new twist is that prospective brides and grooms themselves are more and more hiring private de- tctives to check out the other partner. By FAVOUR SLATER Today's lesson on the intricacies of high finance focuses on COMPAS I ... the mysteries of bidding, scrip, stock markets and things edible. Tickets for the first night party, Feb. 2, at the Exhibition Building of the State Fairground are a superficially staggering $125 per person. This sum will not buy you the town's most expensive dried out roast beef meal. RATHER, THE first $25 covers the food bill ffom a gourmet dinner to a midnight breakfast, or supper whichever the case may be, and access to the open (free) bar plus champagnes, other wines and all the other little fripperies that go with living the good life. The rest of the money ($100) will be given to each guest in the form of scrip to be used during the gigantic auction of goods and services. We will now switch to our expert in this field, stockbroker H. Holden Smith: "If a person doesn't want to bid or wants to cash in left over scrip, it will be bought and sold on an open trading market. This means that a flood of scrip on the market can drive the price down." DETAILS ASIDE, it all boils down to the fact that it will be possible to sell scrip, and any difference between $100 and what you get is tax deductible) and possibly buy it for less than face value. The knowledgeable Mr. Smith, our man on the scene at San Diego's COMBO, tells the tale of one man who became so fascinated with the market he forgot the auction (that couldn't possibly happen here). Result? He bought at $85, sold at $92, thus garnering extra funds for his own private charity. Mrs. John Pritzlaff Jr. is chairman of the committee working on reservations and tickets. Helping her are: Mmes. E. Dean Nash, A. T. LaPrade Jr., Karl E. Voldeng, William T. Boutell and Larry Laughlin. 2 I. MAGNINsco BILTMORE FASHION PARK • 2400 EAST CAMELBACK ROAD I.
