Was the market up or down? siderably more stocks rose than In the words of Robert B. Johr Webber, Jackson & Curtis, "The phrase 'the market' has become more and more meaningless . . . whether 'the market' (referring to one or more of the popular averages) may be up or down . . . will have even less relevance to the performance of specific issues this year." SELECTED issues put on a strong performance, even while some of the best known blue chips declined, dragging down the better-known averages. The one unequivocal fact about the day was that a lot of steam had blown .off the recent advance, evidenced by the decline to 11.67 million shares from 13.72 million Tuesday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 4.34 to 903.95. Among reasons for this, Johns-Manville declined 2 points while Eastman Kodak, General Foods, International Nickel, Procter & Gamble, Standard Oil (New Jersey) and Texaco all fell a point or more. They are leading components of the Dow. ON THE OTHER hand, of 1,509 issues traded on the New York Stock Exchange, 713 advanced while 562 declined. New highs for 1967-68 totaled 41 and new lows 13. . urne Sage; ds Mixed rket volume droped off by more and the list presented a scram- The averages didn't agree. Con- fell. ison, head of research for Paine, Nine of the 15 most active stocks advanced and six declined. International Paper was the most active stock, up Vi at 33% on 269,200 shares, of which 100,000 came in a single block. Glen Alden, up % at 15 J /s, was second most active, remaining in the spotlight, apparently because of speculation that it, too, would succeed as one of the impressive new "conglomerate" companies. GULTON Industries, up 3, was another trading favorite. Also active, Riegel Paper gained ! 7 /8. It has formed a joint company with Brittains Ltd. to make industrial laminates in the United Kingdom. Prices on the American Stock Exchange were irregularly higher. Volume was 6.43 million shares compared with 7.26 million Tuesday. The exchange's index advanced 16 cents to $24.71.
