H" .Sheriff Makes Good in Alabama he Arizona Republic Phoenix, Thurs., Jan. 11,1968 Deep sheriff, says his first year in office has shown at least some whites that "having a Negro Sheriff is not all bad." Negroas outnumber whites in Macon County 22,500 to 4,500. But not until the last election did they muster the voting strength and unity to make one of their race the county's chief law enforcement officer. AMERSON, A 34-year-old former Army MP, took over amid dire predictions that noncooperation by white s would make the job too hot for him to handle. It hasn't worked out that way. "I hear less complaints on him than I got when I was in there," commented Preston Hornsby, a former sheriff who is now probate judge. Dr. Carl Hester, one of the county's two white physicians, said Amerson "has operated on the basis of principle rather than prejudice. I've worked with him a good deal and he has always been on the up and up with me." MRS. J. R. RUSH, a white housewife active in civic affairs, declared that in view of the Negro majority "maybe he is capable of doing a better job than a white sheriff could." She added: "I know a number of whites who have surprised me by admitting he is doing a good job." And Jim Abrams, editor of the weekly Tuskegee News, said: "Nobody writes letters to me complaining about the sheriff." Amerson himself told an interviewer: "You can go right out there on the streets and Lucius Amerson, Smith's Only Negro Sheriff, Ends First Year Dire Predictions Of Noncooperation From Whites Have Proved False AP Wirephoto SIAMESE TWINS DIE SUVA, Fiji (UPD-Fiji's first recorded Siamese twins, who shared one heart, died Tuesday, nine hours after they were born to an Indian woman, officials said yesterday. most whites and Negroes will tell you I'm trying to be fair. There's no favoritism when a Negro is involved. "THERE ARE some white elements who still can't do what's right — a Negro automatically has nine strikes against him whenever he does anything involving the white community. "But I have nothing to do with those so - called Black Power militants. I would never burn down a city or tear up a town. "Black Power, anyway, is just a term people use. It's the same as white power. I don't see a lick of difference. "A NEGRO probably should have been elected sheriff in this county long ago. Maybe in a county like this white people have no business holding office. "But I don't believe there is anywhere in the South where Negroes have tried harder to cooperate with the white community even though the whites are in the minority." Amerson declined to say whether the Negro-white arrest ratio had changed since he took office last January. However, Hunter Slaton, clerk of the county's circuit court, declared there had been "no difference at all" in the number of criminal convictions. SHERIFF Amerson predicted some Alabama counties eventually may have all-Negro governments. But he added: "I don't believe you should try to eliminate all whites from office. I'd like to see a balance. But the whites didn't see that years ago. This is one of the reasons things are the way they are now." He declared that Negroes are no longer willing to vote for "someone they know doesn't give a damn about them." -Advertisement- Paths and Spots Easily Removed Nothing cleans carpets as beautifully as Blue Lustre in any machine.
