VETErUNS Of FORHCN WARS OF THE UNITED STATES No-Hit Pitcher In Action Sam Jones starts to pump, rears back and throws an aspirin tablet. The Cubs' towering right- hander struck out the Pittsburgh Pirates' side after walking the bases full in the ninth inning. •That closed out the season's initial major league no-hit, no-run game and Chicago's first in the National League in 31 years. Not one is hitting the huge, righthanded fastballer much on ,he mound these days but he sure s getting belted hard in the pocketbook. Take his six-hit, 6-2 victory over Pittsburgh yesterday, for example. Newcombe figured he had put in a pretty profitable day. After all, he tripled home two runs in the ninth and even stole home standing up to nail down bis seventh victory without a loss. Upon returning to his hotel room, however, he learned he had been fined $40 for arguing with Umpire Frank Secory last Tuesday night. Of course, that line doesn't compare with the $400 one taken out of his last salary check for refusing to pitch jatting practice earlier this month but every little bit hurts. Newcombe, who hopes he'll get all that money back, and then some, in the form of a World Series' cut, enabled the pace-setting Dodgers to retain their six- game lead over the rampaging Cubs, who beat the Cardinals 3-.0. The victory, turned in by veteran Howie Pellet, marked the Cubs' seventh in their last eight games. Rookie Marv Blaylock's llth inning double drove in Roy Smalley from second base and gave the Phillies a four-game sweep over the Giants 3-2. Bob Miller relieved starter Bob Kuzaya in the sixth, pitched three-hit ball the rest of the way and was rewarded with his second triumph. Hoyt Wilhelm, third Giant pitcher, was the loser. Cincinnati nipped Milwaukee 5-4 in the first of two scheduled games but the nightcap was powt- poned because of rain. The Red- legs won the game with four runs the fifth inning, Gus Bell singling home two runs and Wally Post another two. Ted Kluszewski became the major league home run leader when he blasted his 12th four-bagger. The Yankees beat Washington 8-4 and 7-3, the Chicago White Sox downed Cleveland 3-1 the first game, but lost the in second 10-9, and Baltimore shutout Boston 2-0 in the other American League game. Detroit rained out at Kansas City. was Fast Ring Action Expected Tonight In TV Ten-Rounder NEW YORK — (UP) —Featherweight contenders Carmelo Costa and Lulu Perez, two speedy kids from Brooklyn, meet tonight in a TV-radio 10-round bout that could provide the fastest ring-action of the year. Moreover, the battle of these two jet-scrappers in Madison Square Garden will decide which shall continue toward a shot at the 126-pound crown. Right now the division is utterly devoid of a Worthwhile challenger for Sandy Saddler's title. Costa is ranked sixth among contenders; Perez, seventh. Tonight's principals are the fastest men in their class—perhaps the speediest pound for pound in any class. But neither BRADLEY & GEREN Attorneys-At-Law Bradley Building Phone 111 -:• Groetbeck can approach champion Saddler in cxplosiveness. Perez, the 22-year-old son of a hotel chef, is a fair puncher, and he is a slight favorite at 6-5 to win. Costa, 21-year-old son of a city Water department caretaker, is a light puncher. Carmelo registered but three knockouts in his 31 professional bouts. Perez has 13 kayoes on his 32-51 list. He belted out ex-champ Willie Pep in two heats. But Lulu is somewhat fragile. He was stopped by Pervy Bassett and by champion Saddler is an over-the- weight match. There are no kay- oes against Costa's 25-2-4 list. > o HITTING SPREE WINS FOR WACO Joe Duhem, out of the lineup for two days, returned Thursday night with a bang, rapping out a home run, a double and a single FREE BARBECUE (Beef) Sunday, May 29 County Line Tavern MEXIA—WACO HIGHWAY 84 Donee Every Night On Cool Potio to lead the Waco Pirates past Harlingen, 6 to 2 in the Big State League.
