WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 1959 BLTTHEVILLB (ARK.V COURIER NEWS PAGEITVB STARR GAZING By Betty* NeUe Starr Cwuio New* SU* Cwnopaiuknt ' You'd have to hunt high and with her boy friend. PENNEYB WAGON LOADS OF VALUES DURING OUR •. * low to come up with an aphorism that pulls as much punch as, "If you can't beat 'em, join 'em" — and that's exactly what happened to Debbie Reynolds. I get a big laugh out of Elizabeth Taylor changing her religion — just what was her religion? I'm of the opinion as Ben Franklin, if men (and women) are so wicked with religion, what would they be without it? Don't answer. The crack Elizabeth made about keeping her wedding date with Eddie, a deep, dark secret for the reason she, nor he, wanted any publicity. My way of thinking, no paid press agent in the universe could have done a better job in getting those two names in the headlines with more finesse. Smart gal, Elizabeth Taylor. All this publicity (which they abhor) has about finished up Eddie, but what has it done to Elizabeth? Nothing. I couldn't help but study the expressions on the faces of Elizabeth's parents', who attended Eddie's opening night in Las Vegas, with their rich daughter. Speaking of thwarting the minds «f young people, just what can be expected with .women like Elizabeth Taylor, Lana Turner and Ingrid Bergman being the biggest box office attractions? So they're'good actresses, aren't there others? People and their torn curiosity is what keeps these at the top.. Movie goers would settle for the others but then some spectacular thing traipses aU over the world People go see them, thinking it will show on them, but with makeup experts, they can work wonders with bags under the eyes or split lips, but those experts haven't come up with the answer of gilding the lily from the inside. I've always looked on New England as being the most peaceful part of these United States and thought many times what a wonderful place to go to rest my weary bones, but I have certainly changed my feeble mind. Of all sacreligious antics, the "cool man cool" jazz mass at St. Paul's Episcopal communion services beat anything these old flap- ears ever heard. If it takes jazzing up "The old time religion" or the "Apostles Creed" and a few other phrases of the ceremony, then I say again, give the teen-agers a little more rope and they'll even have the preachers eating out of their hands. The day that happens in MY church, then I'm taking to the backwoods where the theme of the preacher isn't so realistic. If it takes that sort of thing to illustrate a hermon, heaven forbid a sermon on Revelation, which scares the daylights out of you just reading it, certainly wouldn't want it given in the pulpit to the tune of "Old Black Magic." Alford Aide Will Return To Capital LITTLE ROCK W>—Assignment | of Claude Carpenter Jr.-as the field representative of Hep. Dale Alford (D-Ark) in Little RocSc was announced Tuesday. Carpenter has been serving as Alford's administrative assistant in Washington since January. 'Alford said in Washington that Carpenter would return to Little Rock this week. The congressman said he was not ready to name Carpenter's successor as administrative assistant. In his new capacity Carpenter will receive a salary of $5,000 annually, compared to the $13,340 he was paid in Washington. Alford said Carpenter would furnish his own office, and pay a secretary without cost to the government. Carpenter has a private law practice here. He is a former aide to Gov. Orval E. Faubus.
