New York Times Service NEW YORK - A common virus that is transmitted through sexual contact has been linked with cancer of the cervix, and researchers believe the finding indicates (hat cervical cancer is a venereal disease. The virus, called type 2 herpes virus, is closely related to the herpes virus that causes cold sores around the mouth. Type 2 herpes has been found to cause similar sores on the genital organs and the cervix. EVIDENCE OF infection by the virus has been found in a high percentage of women with cervical cancer but only rarely in women without cancer, a research team from Baylor University College of Medicine reported yesterday. The Baylor team's findings, which are described in the current issue of the Journal Science-fare supported by the announcement of similar re- sult$>''--f6und by another research t§am conducting a study at Emory University. Both teams pointed out in telephone interviews that they do not know whether the link between the vims and cervical cancer is one of cause and effect or merely of unusual coincidence. Studios arc now going on to determine whether the virus will cause cancer if injected into animals. "But we do know." Dr. Joseph Melnick of the Baylor team said, "that however one is spread, th^ .fltherJs spread^ the same &&s$£$t we khSfo•" that the ^virus is spread through'Se^ual contact/;. , ... ^ OTHERS ON llie'' Baylor ' team were Dr.. William E. Rawls, who headed the current study, Dr. Wayne A. F. . Tompkins and Dr. Manuel E. Figueroa. Virsues and virus-like particles have been periodically associated with several kinds of cancer, and it is fairly well established that Burkitt's lymphoma, a, cancer that odi. curs in. Africa, is.caused by a' virus of the herjfes'type. Cervical cancer, the third leading cause of cancer deaths in women, will strike an estimated; 40,000 women this year and cause about 10,000 deaths. Most of the victims will be women of low socioeconomic status and probably women who had consorted with uncircumcised men. A STUDY by the Baylor group of 25 women with cervical cancer revealed that 88 per cent of them had been infected by the virus. Evidence of the VIMS was found in only 16 per cent of 58 non- Cancerous wotnen matched 6tf "a'ge and socioeconomic status. '"'"''in addition, the team reported, children and women of high socioeconomic status only rarely had evidence of fype 2 herprs virus infection. Dr. Andre Nahmins. a member of the Emory University team working on the same subject, said it is clear that the virus and cervical cancer are closely associated and that the cancer, like the virus, "seems to be a vrne- reallv transmitted disease." Lines and trees collapsed under the weight of a foot of wet snow in Anaconda, 40 miles west of Butte in Montana, and 10 inches of snow fell on Interstate 90, about 15 miles west of Butte. AT ROGERS Pass in Montana, 80 miles west of Great Falls, 8 inches of snow was measured.
