Goodbyes and other notes November 20, 1988 7A In tile mad house that has been Seguin Uiis week, we* have plenty of things 'going on behind the football scene: Ftf st of all, t would like to take ness to extend a farewell to & good ftend who just happens to be in the coaching business. r , Rudiger Wrobel, who most know m Coach Roger Wrobel of the f exas Lutheran College s6ccer team, is leaving Seguin to return to his native Rteli West Oermany after the U.S. government decided they could no ranger extend Wrbbel's work permit. : This is a loss not only for Seguin, but to the sport itself in this part of the country. Roger 1 not only taught the sport to kids via his youth camps, but •He/constantly tried to promote inter- eTt in 'the sport 31 1 have a lot of fond memories of Roger. I was with him when he saw his first football game, when he sorted his program. In just five short years, Roger took a ragtag club team and formed it into a district champion. This guy-knew his stuff. He also helped out Coach Mike Orr at Seguin High School when SHS entered play in soccer. v ...But now it can' be revealed the result of one soccer contest that qjfln't make the paper. nOne day a few years back, Roger was getting ready for practice and I decided to get in the goal to see just good the former German pro could kick. Needless to say, Wrobel whizzed several shots all over the goal making my goaltending efforts quite helpless. Then Roger said, "John, this one is for a beer." In probably my luckiest attempt at any kind of sport, I just happened to dive in the right direction and stuck out my left arm. The ball hit my forearm and sailed over the' goal. Roger had missed. At the time I played like it didn't hurt at all and acted like I knew what I was' doing. Roger, if the truth be known, my arm hurt for about a week. You almost tore it off with that shot. I owe you one, pal. , — The annual pre-Thanksgiving golf tournament between former students from Texas A&M and the University of Texas was cancelled this year since the UT grads couldn't find enough players to field a team. Thus came this public announcement from the local Aggies: "Earlier this week, Bill Keller, president of the Oaadalope County chapter of .the fexlss University Former Students Association, confirmed reports that his group was unable to field a team. Every Texas University former student is asked to mail a ten dollar check to the Quadalupe County A&M Club Scholarship Fund at 115 N. Austin St. Seguin, Tex. 78155." , i . Ouchl — Former Texas Lutheran baseball standout Anthony Clapp is now a teacher at St. James School and started a soccer program. The team has lost every game, but Clapp says the kids are excited and having fun. Clapp got help in starting the program with some help from friends at TLC. — Seguin was featured on Channel 12's "On the Rpad" segment Friday on their 5 p.m. newscast as they sent out their sports team to film all the happenings surrounding "Matador Mania." Needless to say, it was good publicity for the team as well as the city. The kids are having a blast, that's for sure. —One last note on last week's big upset over Holmes. Only one person in Seguin that this reporter ran into said that Seguin was going to win: Matador fan Clifton Doege. (Staff photo by Steve Boehm) AUSTIN — The Seguin Matadors opened their basketball season Friday night but ran up against a highly- touted Austin LBJ squad and came ayy^y on the down side of a 95-83 decision. •"Seguin trailed 48-45 at the half, but tlie host squad outran the Mats in the second half to notch their second win in as many tries this season. Seguin was led by Van Price who threw down 25 points while Jono Cockrum added 14. Seguin trailed by just five points with two minutes to play, but lost Price to a muscle strain and LBJ took over the final minutes. "Our kids matched them basket for basket and I have to be pleased," said SHS Coach Harry Miller. "LBJ has the best athletes of anybody we play. We just didn't guard them inside and they hurt us on the offensive boards." The Seguin boys travel to San Antonio's Taylor Field House Tuesday for an 8 p.m. meeting with Taft. Darrell Harborth led theNHS boys with 19 points. Navarro led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter but fell off in the second half. ; The Panthers host St., Anthony on ''''' By JOHN R. CORBETT Sports Editor The Seguin Lady Matadors may have suffered their first loss of the season after bowing 65-57 to San Antonio Clark in the finals of the Lady Matador Invitational Saturday afternoon, but the locals girls have already matched last season's victory total. The local girls stand at 3-1 on the year after winning two games in the tourney. The Lady Mats started with a one-point win over Austin Crockett Thursday and then kept up the pace with a 63-48 pounding of Austin Travis in Friday's second round. Jessica Gay tan scored 15 points in the win over Travis while DeDe Pargmann notched 14 and Amy Hicks added 11;....',-. ; : ^ Seguin led by 10 at 36-26 at the half and never looked, back. In Saturday's championship game, a poor third quarter by Seguin ruined their upset bid against a Clark team that is ranked as one of the top teams in San Antonio. After scraping to stay with 38-33 at the half, the'Lady Mats went almost seven minutes without scoring as Clark outscored Seguin 18-2 in the quarter. Seguin made one last surge, but it was too little, too late. Pargmann again led Seguin with 14 points. The SHS girls host Memorial at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.
