BERSCHLER and SHENBERG By Rusty Pray INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Paul T. Valasek, 52, a decorated Philadelphia police officer left partially paralyzed by a gunshot wound to the face he suffered as a 24-year-old rookie, was found dead Tuesday in his Northeast Philadelphia apartment. A spokesman for the Medical Examiner's Office said yesterday that preliminary autopsy findings show Officer Valasek died from hypertension. The case remains under review to determine whether, nearly 28 years later, the bullet still lodged at the base of his skull played any role in his death. In July 1974, Officer Valasek was shot at 17th Street and Allegheny Avenue by Luis Oliven-cia, a passenger in a car that had pulled into a closed gas station about 1 a.m., raising the suspicions of Officer Thomas Grady.

According to the police report, after Grady had pulled into the station behind the car, Olivencia got out and began walking across Allegheny Avenue. Grady called to Officer Valasek and his partner, John Peterson, who had just pulled up to the scene, to stop the "man wearing the black hat." As Peterson drove up beside him, Olivencia pulled a gun and held it to Peterson's head. Peterson grabbed the gun with his left hand, and Olivencia fired three shots as he backed away from the patrol car. One of the rounds hit Officer Valasek in the mouth. The bullet lodged in the back of his skull.

Officer Valasek managed to get off one shot. Grady and Peterson also returned fire, killing Olivencia. Officer Valasek, who had been on the force less than six months and on the street six weeks, spent the next 5V2 months in the hospital and the rest of his life paralyzed on his left side. "Of course, he was very resentful," said his mother, Margaret. "He was only 24 years old.

His life hadn't begun yet." In the Region Virginia B. Leith Investment counselor, 64 Virginia "Sissie" Bullitt Leith, 64, of Villanova, an investment counselor, died of cancer Saturday at her home. Mrs. Leith was raised in Swar-thmore and was a graduate of Oldfield's School in Glencoe, Md. She attended Wellesley College and the University of Wisconsin.

In 1979, she became an assistant to John Lloyd, an investment counselor, and in 1989, became a stockholder in Lloyd, Leith Sawin, an investment firm that she and Lloyd formed with Ed Sawin. The firm, located in Center City and later in Wayne, merged with Tower Bridge Advisors last year. A son, Ken, said that as a woman who successfully managed investment portfolios, his mother "broke glass ceilings." He said she enjoyed mentoring young women considering careers in finance. In 1995, she became the first woman president of the Philadelphia Securities Association. She was on the boards of International House, Wellesley College Alumni Association, Prints in Progress, and the Female Association, a philanthropic organization that assists women in need.

"He could make me laugh about Vietnam," Wilson said. "No one else would understand." Officer Valasek worked for the Budd Co. in quality control for a time. Then he followed his brother, Joseph, and an uncle onto the force. After the shooting, Officer Valasek was decorated for valor by the Police Department.

He remained with the force for six more years before taking his disability pension. His marriage, which had been planned before he was shot, ended in divorce several years later. Mostly, what he did was cope. He learned to get by without the use of his left arm. He adjusted to walking with the help of a brace and a cane.

He lived on his own and accomplished what he could. "I saw him mostly every day, through the highs and lows," Wilson said. "He would never let on he was hurting. Even in his condition, he could still laugh. I've never known a man as strong as Paul to keep going like he did.

But I know he was in severe pain. I know he suffered." Wilson was the one who found Officer Valasek on Tues- her life in her family's home there. She graduated from George School in Newtown in 1933 and married Charles Knight in 1936. While her children were attending Westfield Friends School, she drove students in the school's station wagon and when her children were older, she worked as a bookkeeper and in administrative capacities at the school for 25 years until the 1970s. Her daughter Mary Anne Hunter said her mother, who had done volunteer work for various organizations over the years, "had a gift for getting people involved in worthwhile projects." Nine years ago, she and her husband moved from Riverton to Pennswood Village, a Quaker retirement community across the field from George School.

She scheduled visits to Pennswood by the school's students and facilitated the use of the school's pool by the residents. "She saw a need at Pennswood for people to mend and alter residents' clothing so she organized a sewing club," her daughter said. Mrs. Knight was clerk of the Westfield Friends Meeting, a member of George School Committee, and was on the board of the Cinnaminson Home. Her husband, to whom she was married for 57 years, died in 1993.

In addition to her daughter, she is survived by another daughter, Carol; a son, Robert; two brothers; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. May 4 at George School Meeting House, 1690 Langhorne-Newtown Newtown. Burial is private. Memorial donations may be made to George School Arboretum Fund, Box 4438, Newtown, Pa.
