Sullivan, 76, an ex-FBI agent who helped hunt down John Dillinger and then launched a long career fighting organized crime in Miami, died of heart failure Sunday. Mr. Sullivan, founding director of the Greater Miami Crime Commission, died at North Miami General A native of Washington and a graduate of Georgetown University, Mr. Sullivan joined the Federal Bureau of Investigation and worked for the agency for 10 years in Chicago, San Francisco, New York and El Paso, Tex. He was one of the agents in a special FBI gangster squad that tracked down Dillinger outside Chicago's Biograph Theater in 1934.

He also was in on the capture of the Barker-Karpis gang, headed by Ma "Kate" Barker and her sons. Sullivan and other agents traced her and son Fred to a cottage near Ocala, Fla. In the ensuing gunfight, the two criminals died. IN 1942, MR. Sullivan left the FBI and went into private security business in Miami.

In 1960, he was credited with breaking up an underworld scheme to capture control of the jukebox industry. He also had a record of opposition to casino gambling. Mr. Sullivan retired in 1978 from his career of fighting crime.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Ellen, seven sons and six daughters.
