B12 South Jersey www.philly.com THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Thursday, August 15, 2002 Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices Death Notices In the Nation and the World Winifred Watson Novelist, 95 Winifred Watson, a popular British writer of the 1930s who found a new readership in the 21st century, has died at 95. She died Aug. 5 in a hospital near her home in northern England, said publisher Nicola Beauman, who reprinted the author's humorous, risque 1938 novel, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day. The November 2000 reprint won warm critical praise. "Why has it taken more than half a century for this wonderful flight of humor to be rediscovered?" the Guardian newspaper said of the book, about a governess mistakenly sent to the home of a nightclub singer instead of to a family of unruly children.

"Pure Cinderella farce, with beaus, bounders, negligees and nightclubs," the newspaper said. Ms. Watson wrote six well-reviewed and popular novels in the 1930s and early '40s, then gave up writing during World War II to rear her son. Ed Headrick Frisbee designer, 78 Ed Headrick, father of the modern Frisbee and designer of Wham-O's first "professional model" flying disc, has died in San Jose, Calif. He was 78.

Mr. Headrick died at home in his sleep Monday, according to his eldest son, Ken. He had been partially paralyzed by two strokes suffered last month at a disc golf tournament in Miami. Mr. Headrick patented toy maker Wham-O's first designs for the modern Frisbee after improving the aerodynamics of the company's initial models.

Joining the company in the early 1960s, he incorporated concentric grooved lines into the top of the curved disc to create the first "professional model." The added ridges created better lift, straighter flight and improved stability by increasing "interference with the smooth airflow pattern," according to U.S. Patent No. 3,359,678, filed by Headrick on Nov. 1, 1965, for a "Flying Saucer." The family will honor Mr. Headrick's wish that his ashes be molded into memorial flying discs to be given to family and friends and others who make donations in his memory, Ken Headrick said.
