ASSOCIATED PRESS Bridging the economic gap in the most expensive cultural exchange in baseball history, the Boston Red Sox last night reached a preliminary agreement with Daisuke Matsuzaka on a $52 million, six-year contract. With $103.11 million on the table, the two sides flew back to Boston on Red Sox owner John Henry's private plane.

The Red Sox planned a 5 p.m. news conference today to announce the deal, the Associated Press said. Henry declined to comment late last night. Matsuzaka gets a $2 million signing bonus, $6 million next year, $8 million in each of the following three seasons, and $10 million in each of the final two years. The Red Sox won the bidding for Matsuzaka's rights last month, promising to pay the Sei-bu Lions $51.11 million if they let him leave for the major leagues.

If there had not been a deal, Matsuzaka's rights would have remained with the Lions and he could not have been offered to major-league teams again until next November; he is not eligible to become a free agent in Japan until after the 2008 season. Matsuzaka has a 108-60 record in Japan with a 2.95 earned run average and 1,355 strikeouts in 204 games. He was MVP of the inaugural World Baseball Classic in March, won by Japan. The Red Sox also finalized a $36 million, four-year deal with infielder Julio Lugo. Finally, the Sox agreed to terms on a $750,000, one-year contract with backup catcher Doug Mirabelli.

Padres. Greg Maddux finalized his $10 million, one-year contract with San Diego. The four-time Cy Young Award winner, at 41, is 333-203 with a 3.07 earned run average in his career. He split last season between the Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Dodgers, going 15-14 with a 4.20 ERA. Blue Jays.

DNA testing in the Duke lacrosse rape case found genetic material from several males in the accuser's body and her underwear but none from any team member, defense attorneys said in court papers yesterday. The papers were filed by attorneys for the three lacrosse players charged, Reade Seligmann, Collin Finnerty and David Evans. They complained that the information about DNA from other men was not disclosed in a report prosecutors provided ear- outfielder Rick Ankiel, 27, to become a free agent. Outfielder Damon Hollins, 32, became a free agent when Tampa Bay declined to offer him a contract. Righthander Mike Wood became a free agent when Texas did not offer him a contract.

The Minnesota Twins finalized their $1.5 million, one-year contract with Jeff Cirillo. lier this year to the defense. The testing was conducted at a private laboratory for the prosecution. "This is strong evidence of innocence in a case in which the accuser denied engaging in any sexual activity in the days before the alleged assault, told police she last had consensual sexual intercourse a week before the assault, and claimed that her attackers did not use condoms and ejaculated," the defense said. In an interview, defense attorney Joseph Cheshire said the findings suggest the accuser had sex shortly before the March team party for which she was hired to perform as a stripper.

The woman has said three lacrosse team members gang-raped her in a bathroom during the party. District Attorney Mike Nifong declined to comment on the defense motion.
