He ran side by side with Dave Whitcomb of Essex Junction, Vt, for 10 laps before Whitcomb went high with five laps to go and dropped to sixth. Jim Cilley of Groton, Vt, moved into second and finished in that spot Norm Andrews of Warren, Vt, was third, Jim Barton of Williston Vt, fourth and Keith Lamell of Essex fifth. The eighth-seeded Chesnokov of the Soviet Union outlasted No. 4 Emilio Sanchez of Spain, 6-7 (1-7), 6-4, 7-6 (7-5). Chesnokov, who has won three, three-set matches in Rome and played five tiebreaks, said he expected an even tougher battle in Sunday's final against Muster. The match is a repeat of the Monte Carlo final, won by Chesnokov in straight sets. "I don't know what I'm going to do tomorrow," he said.

"We're both going to die out there." Baseball BILL LEE, Bill Monbouquette and Dick Radatz combined on a one-hitter Saturday as the Boston Red Sox Old Timers blanked the Equitable All-Stars, 2-0, in an annual exhibition at Fenway Park. Lee, who pitched in the Florida Senior League last winter, pitched two perfect innings. Monbouquette allowed a single by Willie Horton in one inning, while Radatz hurled a 1-2-3 inning. The Red Sox got a run off Gem Labine in the second when Bernie Carbo scored from second on a single by Gerry Moses. Boston got its other run in the third against Mark Fidrych.

Jim Gosger tripled to right and scored on Rick Miller's sacrifice fly to right. Tennis THE TWO HOTTEST players in women's tennis will meet for the German Open championship. In Saturday's semifinals, top-seeded Steffi Graf defeated Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union, 6- 4, 6-2, and No. 2 Monica Seles downed Sandra Cecchini of Italy, 6-1, 6-3. Graf has won 66 straight matches, while Seles enters Sunday's final with a 23-match winning streak.

"Seles is very tough, very aggressive," Graf said. "She doesn't make too many mistakes and moves very well. She is definitely one of my top challengers." Graf is 3-0 against Seles, but they haven't played in seven months. Seles lost their last meeting, 7- 5, 6-4, in Brighton, England on a fast indoor court But Seles has improved since then and the clay surface at the German Open is better suited to her baseline game. "I have more shots that I can use now," said Seles, a 16-year-old Yugoslavian.

"But Steffi is a great player. I will have to play well off both sides and hit very hard. "One of us has to lose. I will just try my best and go for my shots." THOMAS MUSTER and Andrei Chesnokov won third-set tiebreakers Saturday to advance to the finals of the Italian Open. Muster, the lOth-seed from Sports roundup Auto racing DALE EARNHARDT grabbed the pole Saturday for The Winston, NASCAR 's all-star stock car race that pits the most recent winners on the Winston Cup Series' circuit For Earnhardt it was his first pole since the Motorcraft 500 at Atlanta in 1987.

He averaged 134.250 mph in a Chevrolet in easily beating Davey Allison, who logged 132.797 mph in a Ford. Darrell Waltrip was third. Earnhardt won $45,000 for winning the pole and his crew split $30,000. The Good wrench Chevrolet team had a pit time of 11.83 seconds, fourth-best of the day. Earnhardt said the key was not making any mistakes.

"It was a team effort" be said. "It was not a fluke thing." Starting on the outside of the second row will be Mark Martin, who averaged 131.489. Fifth through 10th places went to Morgan Shepherd, Bill Elliott, Den-ike Cope, Alan Kulwicki, Ken Schroder and Lake Speed. The Winston does not count in Winston Cup points standings. The format of the race, being run run for the sixth time, has been changed this year.

After a 50-lap segment, the drivers will pit, then sprint the final 20 laps for a winner's purse of at least $200,000. From wire reports V1 The Associated Press Red Sox old-timer Dick Radatz, left, takes an affectionate pat on the belly from Johnny Pesky. Steady round vaults Strange into Colonial lead Golf FORT WORTH, Texas Curtis Strange rode a string of nine consecutive pars into a tie with Ben Crenshaw for the third-round lead in the Colonial golf tournament Saturday. "I just hung in there," Strange said, after a 1-under-par 69 on the windy old Colonial Country Club course. "It was tricky out there," the two-time U.S.

Open champion said of the gusty, shifting winds. "You were never sure where they were coming from." Crenshaw, who shared the second-round lead with left-hander Russ Cochran, needed only a 72 to retain a piece of the lead at 206, 4-under-par. Cochran, winless in six seasons on the PGA Tour, shot a 73 and dropped into a tie for third at 207, one stroke back going into Sunday's final round. He was tied with former Colonial champion Corey Pavin and Nick Price, a South African native now living in the United States. Price closed up with a 67 and Pavin matched par 70.

Scott Hoch and John Huston were next at 208. Hoch had a 68 and Huston a 72. John Mahaffey and Stan Utley were the only others to be below par after 54 holes. They were at 209. Utley had a 69 in winds that gusted to 30 mph, and Mahaffey shot 70.

At par 210, PGA champion Payne Stewart was only four off the pace. Stewart, who finished first and second in his last two starts, had a 68. Tom Watson also shot 68 and was at 211. Crenshaw, who seemed to spend most of the day wandering into and out of the sand, was three over for the round and hadn't made a birdie when he reached the 14th green. Strange opened up birdie-birdie, but gave the shots back with bogeys on the fourth and eighth, where he missed the greens.

He got to one under par for the day system tied her career best round and put her in the lead going into Sunday's final round. That putting contest would pit Rarick against Sherry Steinhauer, Deb Richard, Beth Daniel, Rosie Jones and Hollis Stacy. Rarick has 19 points in the $400,000 tournament, being played under the modified Stableford scoring system, which gives points for birdies, eagles and double eagles, and takes points for bogeys, double bogeys and worse. Her round translated to a bogey-free 6-under-par 66, which she shot in Pasadena, in 1985. Steinhauer scored 5 points on the warm afternoon at Willow Creek Golf Course and climbed into second place with 16 points.

Richard, the second-round leader, gained no ground due to an up-and-down day in which she had two birdies for 4 points, but four bogeys which cost her four points in the Stableford system. "Thank goodness there is another day," Richard said. "I still have a chance to win the tournament." Trevino takes charge HOUSTON Lee Trevino shot 5-under-par 67 for the second consecutive day to increase his lead to four strokes Saturday after two rounds of the Doug Sanders Classic. Trevino's 134 for 36 holes broke the tournament record by three strokes and left him four ahead of Bob Charles and six ahead of George Lanning and Orville Moody, who shot a tournament-low 66 in the second round. Trevino carded four birdies and only one bogey before an eagle on 16 put him at 10 under par.

He was three under for the front nine. Charles birdied five holes to move into second place. From wire reports with a 20-footer on the ninth hole, then preserved it with a 25-foot par-saving putt on the 10th. He paired in from there all he needed to do to gain a share of the top spot. "Nine pars is not too bad at Colonial," he said.

"But I left 15-foot birdie putts short on the 15th and 16th. Leaving 'em short is not too sporty." Rarick leads in Bradley HIGH POINT, N.C. If it comes down to a putting duel among the leaders, Cindy Rarick knows where the smart money should go in the final round of the Pat Bradley International. "If I had jto putt off against every single one of those girls, I would bet on myself," said Rarick, whose 12 -points under the modified Stableford scoring Scoreboard Free Press sports: local, 863-3650; long distance in Vermont, 1-800-698-2255 Sports on the air Television St. Joseph 363; 7.
