THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER Monday, August 9, 2004 Review Music Vans Warped Tour still rolling along in its 10th year E4 www.philly.com and played a swinging amalgam of dusty garage rock and new wave. It's a shame so many opted for the generic pop-punk of Story of the Year in the same time slot. Some more hotly tipped acts left varying impressions. Irish hooligans Flogging Molly were a blast, channeling the Pogues and the Kingston Trio with decidedly non-punk instruments fiddle and accordion on hoist-a-pint fight songs such as "Devil's Dance Floor." Goofball punks NOFX were short on punch lines, and lighter on hooks. The unapologetically metallic Coheed and Cambria could be this generation's Tool or Iron Maiden with their sinewy, rhythmic undercurrent and lovelorn songs that seem conceptualized by sinister minds.

But an emo boy's vulnerability resonates from singer-guitarist Claudio Sanchez's majestic voice. He was one of the day's few singers with the pipes and the passion to keep the more sensitive souls in the crowd hanging on every word. For $25, fans got 98 bands and more. Among the best: Phenomenauts and Flogging Molly. Patrick Berkery FOR THE INQUIRER Since the summer package tour became a popular rock-and-roll business model in the early '90s, many traveling daylong music fests have come and gone.

Once-successful treks such as the jam-band-oriented H.O.R.D.E. tour quietly faded away, while Lollapalooza, the granddaddy of them all, again hangs in limbo, finding it hard to please everyone in the fickle alternative music market. Meanwhile, that punk-rock day camp known as the Vans Warped Tour is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer. And judging by the sold-out crowd it drew Friday to the Tweeter Center where many teenage punk enthusiasts hauled around shopping bags full of swag purchased from bands, record labels and clothing companies it's probable that another generation will flock to the Tweeter in 2014 for the 20th anniversary show. At $25 a ticket which included 98 bands across 10 stages, a DJ tent, karaoke, artist meet-and-greets, biking and skateboarding exhibitions, plenty of room inside the pavilion for chaperoning parents to relax, and all the ironic T-shirt slogans you could handle (best printable one: "I'm the man from the Warped show was a steal of a deal.

Despite countless undistinguished hard-core bands with fire-breathing "singers" in dire need of a hug, and old school punk bands obviously more concerned with the height of their Mohawks than their songs, this was a fairly interesting lineup. However, one had to travel to the dustiest corners of the parking lot (where six of the stages, including the Teal roared through a brain-feeding, body-moving 30 minutes of rocked-out garage soul. Throughout the day, many acts made stock anti-Bush declarations between songs. But only and veteran agit-punks Bad Religion through the incensed thrash of new song "Sinister Rouge" let their music do the politicized talking and used their banter for another popular between-song topic: New Jersey. The fringes of the parking lot featured locals such as Philly's Sometime in April and West Chester's Arms of Orion making a decent racket on the Ernie Ball stage.

About 100 paces away, on the Smartpunk.net stage, Brazil played a musically advanced brand of emo. One of the best performances occurred in the far north corner of the parking lot on the Space Station stage. Playing to maybe 20 people, the Phenomenauts from San Francisco looked as if they had walked off the set of a low-budget sci-fi film in their homemade space fatigues and helmets, Coheed and Cambria (from left) Mic Todd, Josh Eppard, Travis Stever and Claudio Sanchez were a standout. and Brian main stages, were located, along with many of the vendors and side attractions) and arrive really early to catch the best stuff the nearly 10-hour festival offered. D.C.

quartet Washington Social Club opened the Volcom stage in the pavilion shortly after 11 a.m. to a sparse but spirited crowd that bobbed to the band's wry marriage of late-'70s British punk and bubblegummy ear candy such as the anthemic "Breaking the Dawn." On the Brian stage, the politically progressive Swedes of the (International) Noise Conspiracy Review Music Rivers: Off red carpet and onto Court TV Controversy quelled, Beenie Man goes on packed up her daughter, Melissa, and fled for the more lucrative TV Guide Channel. However, that decision will prevent viewers from finding out the Riverses' thoughts on the Emmy nominees' red-carpet fashions. has an exclusive deal as the only cable network allowed on the carpet. dent man." Throughout his cover of Bob Marley's paean to freedom, "Redemption Song," he addressed the protests. "If you have sex with a man, that's your own business. We don't fight against lifestyles. We just don't want anyone to molest our kids." The crowd wasn't interested in controversy. They applauded Beenie's stance, his risque lyricism, and his opening acts.

While crooner Kevin Lyttle took on the jittery soul-calypso of "Turn Me On," TOK, Silver Kat, and Tonto Metro DeVonte went for the harder stuff. Like Beenie, each was backed by Rough Cut a powerhouse band that meshed gurgling, glacial synthesizers with squiggles of Talking Heads-like art-funk A.D. Amorosi FOR THE INQUIRER With a catalog of raunchy hits, devout fans, and a crossover smash, dance hall don Beenie Man could have sold out the Electric Factory without controversy. But an air of protest prevailed for Jamaican Dave's Annual Summer Jam Friday with Beenie, reggae-hop sensations TOK, and others. Like its national counterparts, the Pennsylvania Lesbian and Gay Task Force sought apologies and concert cancellations because of Beenie's "Damn" and "Han Up Deh" older songs whose homophobic lyrics call for violence.

But with a preshow agreement that Beenie would not perform those songs, the only banners raised were green-and-yellow flags representative of the 42d anniversary of Jamaica's independence. To an enthusiastic crowd, Beenie performed steamy, haughty songs, "Girls Dem Sugar" and "Dude," accompanied by steely synth-stabs and riveting techno-ragga grooves. Beenie was a gruffly huffing, chattering thing a melodic hyperkinetic baritone that kept time with his wiry body's rhythm. Though he slowed to take "Murderer" through a tangle of flickering guitars, Beenie kept up the fast pace while quoting from Eminem, Truth Hurts and others. While Beenie did not sing either of the disputed songs, he did acknowledge the controversy "Today is Independence Day," Beenie said.

"I am an indepen ZAP2IT.COM You may not be seeing Joan Rivers on the red carpet at the Em-mys on Sept. 14, but those craving more of the perpetually redecorated comic can turn to the most unlikely of cable sources.
