Group to sponsor Operation KICK-IT The Republican Network of Galveston County will sponsor the Texas Department of Criminal Justice's Operation KICK-IT at 7 p.m.

Defensive driving class to be offered June 26 GALVESTON Galveston College, in conjunction with Get Smart Driving School, will offer a seven-hour defensive driving class at 8:30 a.m.

June 26 in the Dugout at 4015 Ave. Q. The cost is $30. This class satisfies the Department of Public Safety and Texas Education Agency's requirement for ticket dismissal and insurance discount purposes. The class also will be offered July 24 and Aug.

The school's site team and administration have studied and discussed the 7:30 a.m. start time which has been in place at Ball for the past two years and decided that a later start time is more appropriate for local high school students, according to Ball High Principal Kelly Trlica. Next year's school schedule at Ball High will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. School start and end times at all other GISD schools will remain the same for the 1999-2000 school year.

Online program enhances reading skills Book Adventure, an online program designed to motivate young children to read, was launched recently during a live Internet broadcast originating from Washington, D.C. Featured on the Webcast were Douglas L. Becker, president of the Sylvan Learning Foundation, and representatives of some of the foremost national reading and literacy organizations. Aimed primarily at elementary school children, Book Adventure is the only interactive program of its kind available on the World Wide Web at no cost to the user. The program's format offers students the opportunity to earn points for correctly answering questions about books they have read.
