He was later assigned to the Marine Corps, ordered to Marine Base at CheiTy Point for combat training, and was stationed at Columbia prior to transfer overseas. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal which bore two stars.

In addition to the father, he is survived by his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Sophia Shelton; two aunts, Mrs. O. C. Rector and Mrs.
