A special to the Tribune from Schofield, Utah, says: Relations between the striking coal miners and the military authorities were strained here today and a crisis. In, the situation may be expected at any time. A great deal of excitement prevails among the strikers over the posting of two notices by the Pleasant Valley Coal Company. One Is to the effect that all employes who do not report for work tomorrow will be dismissed and that they must vacata the company's property at once. Fully 50 per cent of the miners at winter quarters, it Is said, own homes built on land leased from the company.

The strikers declare they will remain In their homes and trouble is anticipated should any effort be made to eject them. Another notice Issued by the company announces that any minei-s who join the union, must consider themselves discharged. The company announced today that 300 men from another section of the state would be brought in to. take the places of the discharged men. Violence, it is feared, will follow the arrival of the men.

and F. A. Laroche in a 40-horse power gasoline machine, going a mile a minute, crashed over a precipice on the mountain side. He escaped serious injury. These events occurred at the third annual contest under the auspices of the Auto Club of New Jersey, Mr.

Vandcrbilt's time was 1103 3-4 second. The ben previous record for gasoline vehicle was two minutes 45 seconds, made last year by O. P. Nestman. The course is approximately one mile with an average grade of eight per cent; the top it is estimated from 15 to 17 per cent.

In the seventh event of the day Mr. Lnroche experienced the accidei.t that came near -costing him his life. Half the distance had been coverl when Mr. Laroohe turned on going up an incline. He 'struck a sharp curve, the ear shot along so fast that the operator lost control and crashed ovar a precipice.

Mr. A. J. Packard, who was in the car with Mr. Laroche, was thrown headlong over 'a fence, a few yards away, but Mr.

Payne, town marshal, was Rhot and killed on the street this afternoon by Harry "Red" Hooper, whom he had under arrest as fa suspect for a burglary committed last night. Hooper also fired twice at Alonzo Thomas, who started to assist the dying marshal as he lay on the street, but both shots missed. Hooper after killing the mar. shal moved slowly down the street, holding back the crowd with his revolver and reaching the edge of the town escaped, ordering no one to follow him under penalty of death. Armed businessmen pressed all available vehicles into service and started to surround find kill Hooper.

Tt seems certain 'that If caught Hooper will die in his tracks or by mob law.
