Sunday, July 25, 2004 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER www.philly.com CMLW K17 Both sexes enjoy house work percent of all home-improvement projects. They also are involved in planning projects and choosing products. Four million of the nation's 20 million woodworkers are women, according to surveys by woodworking magazines. Many toolmakers are designing ergonomic tools so that women users will have an easi home-improvement market is only bound to increase. By 2010, women-headed households are projected to increase to 31 million, or close to 28 percent of U.S.

households, a study by Fannie Mae suggested in 2003. The number of single women home buyers has doubled since 1989, the National Association 83 percent of women said they felt independent when working with tools. of Realtors says. In 2003, 21 percent of home purchases were made by single women, up from 18 percent in 1997. Single women also accounted for 13 percent of all vacationsecond-home buyers in er time of it.

Mike Mangan, a spokesman for Sears Craftsman tools, said the word ergonomic is much overused, yet he acknowledged that user comfort plays a major role in the design of all tools these days. "Improving women's home-maintenance skills not only will improve their quality of household living but can also boost self-confidence. It's a win-win." Only 3 percent of the women said that working with tools "makes them feel unattractive," according to the survey. More and more women are taking full responsibility for home-improvement projects, whether doing the jobs themselves or hiring and managing professionals, the survey said. But not all women are getting on the bandwagon.

Among married women homeowners, 44 percent said their spouses were solely responsible for home maintenance. And 30 percent of all women homeowners said they were not very handy or handy at all. A 2003 Sears survey of more than 1,000 male and female homeowners found a "gap in confidence" between women and men in their ability to take care of a home problem. A majority of men (71 percent) said they were confident that they would know how to take care of a repair problem, while only 58 percent of the women surveyed said the same. That said, 71 percent of single female homeowners surveyed said that home maintenance was a major concern, compared with 33 percent of WOMEN from Kl nights last year: The first program in 1,500 outlets nationwide attracted 40,000 women.

The sessions continue to attract large numbers of women, the chain says. Lowe's Cos. Inc. does not offer separate clinics for women, despite their success for its chief competitor. Lowe's spokeswoman Julie Valeant said its most recent surveys had shown that 58 percent of women preferred coed sessions.

"We do have different kinds of clinics geared to different genders based on experience," she said. If there is an afternoon clinic on mosaic tile, experience shows that more women than men show up, she said. "So we'll schedule something later in the day that appeals more to men than women," she said. The growing influence of women do-it-yourselfers has caused changes in retailing, store formats and product selections, according to employees in the hardware industry. "Women play an important role in do-it-yourself activity," said Chris Jensen, editor of DIY Retailing, a trade publication.

Jensen said women in two-paycheck households were responsible for initiating about 80 A majority of women consider themselves handy in home maintenance, the survey said. It also said most enjoy the projects. 2003. One in five single women bought homes. The ratio for men was one in 10, the association reported.

Or, to quote trend forecaster Faith Popcorn: "Women are different, and they have money." More women homeowners responding to the Sears survey acknowledged that they would rather attend a home-maintenance workshop than a cooking class. Most women responding said they admired other women who were proficient in tool use. "Involvement is the ultimate power tool," said Georgeann Georges, a Sears vice president. Ergonomic tool design came about, apparently, after manufacturers discovered a few years back that do-it-yourselfers increasingly included women. Women have long been present in the workshop, but toolmakers followed the stereotype.

We forget that the first power tool was invented by a woman. In the early 19th century, Tabitha Babbitt, a Shaker, came up with the idea for a circular saw, powered first by hand cranks and then by a water wheel. Women's influence in the Given the choice of an hour of free advice from Bob Vila (the Sears spokesman) and Dr. Phil, 63 percent said they would choose Vila. single males and 62 percent of married or cohabitating homeowners.

More than half of women homeowners surveyed said it was important for them to learn more about home maintenance and repair, which Georges said she found encouraging. And which makes this survey result not all that surprising: Contact real estate writer Alan J. Heavens at 215-854-2472 or aheavensphillynews.com. Read his recent work at http:go.philly.comalheavens. Great motivator for finishing projects and impressing family beer.

I never know how much to buy, and never know what to do with it when I do. Fortunately, a neighbor was having a party, so we gave her the rest. All except two bottles of Guinness Draught. Those were mine. ALAN J.

HEAVENS from Kl left the previous evening, he decided to take the Speed-Line back to Camden, then ride the new light rail to Trenton and catch a train north. Steven recently finished apprenticing to a cabinetmaker, so he was able to offer some suggestions on my bookcase plans for the master bedroom. He has also been rebuilding U.S. Postal Service delivery vehicles and turning them into ice cream trucks. When you consider the design of the mail trucks, you can probably visualize the finished product.

Uncle Neil was among the first to visit my workshop, and for good reason: He's the one my wife believed I wanted to impress the most. Neil is impressive all by himself. Well into his 70s, he skis, tent camps, travels, and plays lots of golf; he was, for many years, the only family member other than my late father-in-law with whom I could talk about houses and tools. He was blown away, I'm flat tered to say, so much so that he's planning to tackle reassembling a couple of stationery tools stacked in pieces on his basement floor. Even in retirement, there never seems to be enough time.

The other relative I sought to wow was James, the architect brother-in-law. James bought an 1848 English Gothic in Cambridge, 10 years ago he and his wife, Irish, brought me in to do the tile work on the bathrooms. They recently completed a two-story addition and exterior renovation that won a preservation award from the city. Had the job been a bit more substantial, it could have been a project at This Old House, which is based in Boston. According to James, the staff of the show gets lists of renovation projects from municipalities in greater Boston and then calls the homeowners to check out the details and see if they are willing to endure the agony of TV.

They called him, but decided that it wasn't quite what they were looking for. This Old House has never called me, other than to pitch stories or yell at my not-so-deferential attitude toward the show, so that puts James one up on me. But I once met the show's former publicist for lunch at a cafe down the street from James' house and subjected her to a tour of my tile work. I think she was impressed. At least she didn't yell at me.

The only downside to the day was that I bought too much "On the House" appears Sundays in The Inquirer. Contact Alan J. Heavens at 215-854-2472 or aheavensphillynews.com. Read his recent work at http:go.philly.comalheavens. Rooms 51 st Walnut $300sec.
