By Sally A. Downey INQUIRER STAFF WRITER Bert R. Parker Jr. 88, a builder of more than 500 homes and commercial buildings, died Tuesday from complications of hepatitis at Harlee Manor in Springfield, Delaware County. Mr.

Parker was a lifelong resident of Glenolden until 1999, when he moved to Harlee Manor, a retirement community. He was a graduate of Glen-Nor High School and the former Banks Business College in Philadelphia. As a teenager, he took over the family construction business after his father had a serious fall from the roof of a house he was building. The business, Bert R. Parker Sons in Glenolden, included a mill, lumber yard, and a paint and hardware store.

It was successful until the Depression, when there was a downturn in the building industry. Mr. Parker's wife of 60 years, Louise Orrell Parker, said the family was able to stave off bankruptcy. "My brother-in-law and his wife and my husband and me all lived together in my father-in-law's house," she said. "All of us worked for the company, but we didn't take any pay." Business began to thrive again in the post-war housing boom and the company built custom homes in Delaware County, Maryland, and Delaware.
