Sunday, March 27, 2005 THE PHILADELPHIA INQUIRER www.philly.com H3 Review Television CREAM OF MUSHROOM Please call 215-243-9959 for details. 'r MATT SAYLES Associated Press Sandra Oh plays Cristina, one of a gaggle of medical Interns on "Grey's Anatomy," which premieres tonight at 10 on ABC. 'Anatomy' needs shot of originality In the 1920s Comedy Had Manners But Revenge Had Style! Kf NANCY DUSSAULT os The Constant Mother 'mm terns striving for the glory of becoming full-fledged surgeons after seven years of effort. George, the shy and sensitive one. Alex, the mean one.

Cristina, the driven Asian one. Izzie, the gorgeous one. Sandra Oh, hotter than a surgeon's laser after last year's indie feature darling Sideways, plays Cristina. Katherine Heigl, the pretty alien on Roswell, is Izzie, who paid for medical school by working as an underwear model, and who, Hippocrates be praised, prances in her work duds around the house that some of the interns share. ER on steroids, or maybe meth, ABC's Grey's Anatomy races a huge cast of attractive actors through all kinds of medical and emotional travails, as the energetic soundtrack loudly wails maybe to cover up some of the crummy dialogue.

Paging audiology. We can hear the dumb music, already. The show, premiering tonight at 10 on ABC, follows its gaggle of interns at a fever pitch. It could use a trip to the O.R. to remove some formulaic stories, and a visit to the clinic for an injection of originality.

ALICIA ROPER os The Constant Wife wn.it OUT WI PlIlllPMSii The house belongs to Grey's mother, herself an illustrious surgeon. So our heroine's path, apparently, is smoothed by nepotistic grease. And she slept with the boss.

Is anyone surprised that she tends to provoke fits of jealously in her intern peers? It's also not surprising tic surgery. Ellen Pom-peo (Old School, Moonlight Mile) plays the main intern, Meredith Grey, with the crinkliest smiley eyes and a darling overbite. Telemovie fixture Patrick Demp-sey, tall, dark and handsome, is the sawbones assigned to make sure Grey grows into a topflight surgeon. The gruffest one is nicknamed "the Nazi," and she's a short, African American woman, and that's supposed to be ironic. A fellow named Henry Gray first published the definitive anatomy book in 1858.

Maybe the producers are just bad spellers. They are not bad at cramming a gallon of plot into a one-pint IV bag, but, unfortunately, the resulting dose is a steady drip of medical-show cliches. As luck would have it, out of all the overbite cuties and all the simmering hunks in all the bars in all of Seattle, the two find each other the night before she's due to start work. Sex ensues, as it has throughout history on intern shows. The series begins with the two conked out in naked exhaustion, she on the couch, he on the floor below.

Imagine Grey's chagrin later in the day at the hospital, when she meets her mentor and discovers how cruel the TV gods of coincidence can be. The lothar-io big shot has a somewhat different reaction. Don't drool into the operating area, Dr. Shepherd. There are plenty more in- TAKE THE COLTRAIN: PANAMA Featuring Danilo Perez, piano, and Donny McCaslin, saxophone Hailed by Jazz Times as a "world-class pianist," Perez digs deeply into the influence of John Coltrane with his trio, guest musicians and dancers from Panama.
