1 16 Section 1 Chicago Tribune. Wednesday. Janik'tiy Obituaries Jack Eigen, 69; controversial on radio, TV 1 iMovie director George 'My Fair Lady' Oscar Cukor, winner New York's 42d Street. He loved to cite his friendship with "New Yawk" personalities such as Al Jolson, Ed Sullivan and George Jessel. In the Nichols-May parody, which helped augment Mr.

Eigen's reputation and fame, Elaine May played a vacuous starlet who, when asked by "Jack Ego" if she admired Albert Schweitzer, said she did, "although I've never dated him." Mr. Eigen was fired from his Channel 7 show in 1954 for allowing movie staroCleo Moore to "demonstrate the art of a Hollywood kiss." The station's switchboard was inundated with complaints describing the incident as "bad taste," "coarse" and "vulgar." He promptly was fired. Mr. Eigen refused to apologize and claimed he had approval for the two-minute kiss ahead of time from his wife of 18 years. After leaving Chicago, Mr.

Eigen did a regular, five-minute radio show on WAVS in Ft. Lauderdale until one i CHICAGO RADIO personality Jack Eigen was described by one employer, WMAQ-AM, as "America's most imitated interviewer" and was parodied by Mike Nichols and Elaine May as "Jack Ego." If you lived in Chicago during the 1950s and 1960s, had a radio and stayed up past 11 p.m., chances are you knew his voice. Private graveside services for Mr. Eigen, 69, are to be Wednesday in Belh Moses Cemetery, Farmingdale, N.Y. Mr.

Eigen, former celebrity interviewer on Chictgo radio and TV, died of emphysema Sunday in Holy Cross Hospital, Ft. Lauderdale, where he had lived since 1971. Fired several times, including once from Channel 7 for kissing a starlet for two minutes on television, Mr. Eigen repeatedly bounced back to his late-night spot on Chicago radio. He was on WMAQ from 11:15 p.m.

until 12:20 a.m. with "The Jack Eigen Show." He also had TV shows on WGN-TV Channel 9 anJ Channel 44. Mr. Eigen was born in Brooklyn and had a New York radio show that originated from the Copacabana Club before he was brought by NBC to Chicago in the early 1950s. His radio program here was broadcast HOLLYWOOD (AP) Director 'George Cukor, who made stylish 'high-society films with some of Hol-ly wood's greatest leading ladies, I then capped his career with an Oscar for "My Fair Lady," is dead i at age 83.

Mr. Cukor, born in New York City Hungarian immigrants, died late I Monday in the emergency room of 'Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said hospital press aide Tess Griffin. "He came in with heart failure and of it" about 15 minutes later, Griffin said. Mr. Cukor never married.

His gar-', dener of 30 years, who asked that his name not be used, said that only the I household staff was present when he was stricken at his Beverly Hills Ihome. The gardener said Mr. Cukor had I been in good health. "He was strong," he said. ALTHOUGH MR.

CUKOR won his only Oscar for "My Fair Lady," the i 1964 musical about a London linguist based on George Bernard Shaw's i "Pygmalion," his career was filled with memorable films since 1930, when four movies he directed were released. I His hits included "Dinner at Eight" in 1933, "Little Women" the same year, "David Copperfield" 1934, "Camille" 1936, "The Philadelphia Story" 1940, "Keeper of the Flame" 1943, "Gaslight" 1944, "Adam's Rib" 1949, "Born Yesterday" 1950, "Pat and Mike" 1952, "A Star Is Born" 1954 and "Rich and Famous" in 1981, his last movie. Three of those, "Keeper of the Flame," "Adam's. Rib" and "Pat and Mike," starred Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. HE WAS NOTED for his work with great female leads like Marilyn Monroe "Let's Make Greta Garbo "Camille" and "Two-Faced Joart Crawford, Judy Garland, Judy Holliday, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Jean Harlow, Sophia Loren "Heller in Pink Tights" and Ingrid Bergman He was over 80 when he directed iCandice Bergen and Jacqueline Bis-set in "Rich and Famous," and film historians could not recall anyone that old ever directing a major film, particularly working as hard as he Mr.

Cukor's Hungarian-born father, Victor Cukor, was an assistant district attorney in New York when his son was born in 1899. HIS FIRST THEATER job was in 'Chicago as assistant 'stage manager of a play called "The Better Ole." Jack Eigen from the Chez Paree nightclub for years. HIS STYLE sometimes was arrogant and irritating and, at other times, kindly and paternal. It blended his interests in the night life of Chicago's Rush Street and that of week before his death. He also wrote a column called "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" in the local entertainment newspaper, "Around Town." Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; a daughter, Jacqueline; a brother; and three sisters.

George Cukor In 1926, he began directing plays for producer Gilbert Miller. Among them: "The Constant Wife," "The Cardboard Lover," "The Furies," and "The Great Gatsby." He went to Hollywood in 1929, working as dialogue director on "River of Romance" and "All Quiet on the Western Front." Mr. Cukor began directing "Gone with the Wind," but David O. Selznick fired him after a few weeks of shooting. There were reports that Clark Gable feared his role would be overshadowed by Vivien Leigh's.

Mr. Cukor himself said years later: "I don't really know why I was fired." Adm. Ellsberg, salvage expert Thomas Downes; detective, restaurant owner degree at Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was a lieutenant commander at the end of World War I. ADM.

ELLSBERG, who helped refloat the sunken submarines S-51 in 1925 and S-4 in 1927, retired from the Navy three times, first in December, 1926, when he resigned to become chief engineer of Tide Water Oil Co. in Bayonne, N.J. A year later, he was recommis-sioned to help salvage the S-4, which sank off Provincetown, Mass. In 1939, Adm. Ellsberg again returned to Navy duty to help recover the Squalus, which had sunk off Portsmouth, N.H.

Several crew members were saved in that operation. He said he always was "on call" when he thought the Navy needed him. From Chicago Tribune wires BRYN MAWR, Pa. Navy Rear Adm. Edward Ellsberg, a salvage expert and author of 17 books, is dead of cancer at age 91.

Adm. Ellsberg, a resident of St. Petersburg Beach, died Monday in Bryn Mawr Hospital here. Considered one of the nation's top naval salvage experts and engineers, he had been visiting relatives in Wayne, Pa. Included in his 17 books were "On the Bottom," "Hell on Ice," "Captain Paul," a biography of John Paul Jones, and "Pigboat," which was made into a movie titled "Hell Below." He was born Nov.

21, 1891, in New Haven, and was graduated from the Naval Academy in 1914. He later earned a master of science in as a partner as a deterrent against undesirable elements. The Singapore became one of Chicago's "in" places, cited almost daily in newspaper personality columns. Frank Sinatra helped its reputation by occasionally ordering its cole slaw to be air-mailed to parties elsewhere in the country. Other regular patrons were top national figures, including politicians, sports personalities and movie stars.

The Singapore closed in 1974. Mr. Downes is survived by two daughters, Virginia Forbeck and Karen Duffy, and a son, Thomas. his nephew, Emmett Downes. "He and his partners, Ed Hart and later Walter Kerrigan, had a hand in everything in the district" A Tribune reporter who covered the district in those days said, "He was a handsome and imposing man.

He and his partner were very active and were on top of everything that was going on. He was a storybook character." IN THE 1950s, Mr. Downes worked for Sportsman's Park and led its eight-man security force. The owners of the Singapore Restaurant, 1011 N. Rush took him THOMAS DOWNES had a career that included being a detective in the East Chicago Avenue police district, security chief at Sportsman's Park racetrack and a partner in Chicago's nationally famous Singapore Restaurant.

Mass for Mr. Downes, a North Side resident, will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Queen of All Saints Catholic Church, 6280 N. Sauganash Ave. He died Tuesday in Northwestern Memorial Hospital at the age of 75.
