Posters have balance, proportion Marta Boutel Republic Photos by Con Keyei a disciplined style Youth In Action sychedelic Posters . Y;Wi r d, three-dimensional • posters, the kind you can go lintflf.^'a trance over, they're [not; w Psychedelic, with hippie • overtones, they are. t •- : • 1 They stymie the imagina- ttioir all right. All comes clear, Chough, when the artist, ex- i plainf: her unusual, effective -',way^of intricately patterned ^lettering. ^ Marta Boutel, 15, is an un•pretentious, talkative yet shy, [and'Cool teen-ager. ) WHAT BEGAN last sum- '^mer "just to have something ; to do" has resulted in a hot Demand for the colorful pos- ;lers v of the Phoenix Country ' School sophomore. ^inspiration comes during un- .disturbed hours by the radio ;i>r record player, listening to >the conventional, acid rock tfausic of The Jefferson Air;;plane, The; Mamas and the u'Papas, The Beatles. ' ;;'*' It; takes time and patience •'to be creative; but when you Ijafe young and enthusiastic, uyou've plenty of both. \[ An avid interest in art since ^grade school, when she de- i£igned clothes and concentrat- ;-ed oh faces, has developed ilJVlarta's disciplined, personal !;style. ',' The" daughter of Mr. and ;'Mrs. George B. Boutel, 5522 !IE. Exeter, claims "a wild im- ^agination. '* ''irirst I do a rough pencil ^outline, then erase this and go 'over it in colored ink mark- ers," said Marta. Each poster takes about six hours. SHE DOESN'T bother measuring letters, yet everything comes out in perfect, balanced proportion. "I guess I just have a natural eye for it." She can't bear to part with many of the posters, "they're such a part of me." A LOCAL promoter of ydurig talent, Renny Mitchell, former owner of The Store in Thomas Mall, is interested and wants to sell the posters when he opens a new "Store" next month. "She has a basic sense of composition and'color value. She's professional for someone so young," he said. In his .possession is "one of the most balanced and well- proportioned examples of art I've .seen," the 'Don't, You Need • Somebody to Love posted.' "I like to draw posters using the word peace and symbols like the dove and hands raised in the sign of victory," said Marta. A fascination with eyes comes across in "Escape the Zoo," which features a large eye with lashes made of hidden messages and a pupil that reads "We want the world and we want it now." Marta shares a love for art with her mother, who studied art at Scripps College. "It's my favorite subject and I hope to continue in college." SHE CONTINUES to furnish decorative birthday cards for friends, but hesitates to get too involved with poster requests. She'd like to see them used as lamp shades: "Think how they'd look with the light coming through on all those colors." An honor student, Marta also plays the guitar and designs the covers for the school's weekly poetry magazine. . C. B.
