PAGE. TWO BLYTHEVILLE (ARK.l COURIER NEWS FRIDAT, JAN. ?0, 1958 StateDeparfment Probing Death of Montgomery Congress Asks Report On Investigation; Finnish Chief Hanged < Bv CirAKLES F. BARRETT WASHINGTON <fl — The State Department will be nshod to loll ' Congress whtit Is hns lenrncd in an investigation of Ihe death of John C. Montgomery, Montgomery was head ol the department's Finnish desk when he npparently hanged himself from n stair rail In his fashionable Washington home early last Saturday. • Rep. , Brownson (fl-Ind), chairman of a House government opcra: tions subcommittee which handles State Department matters, said late yesterday he would ask Secretary of State Dulles at onc-e for a full report. . The State Department Investigated the death as a routfno procedure since Montgomery had access, to secret documents. Brownson acted after Rep, Busbey (R-Ill), In a House speech yesterday, said "there are many questions that remain unanswered." Busbey indicated he was far from satisfied wEth explanations that Montgomery was despondent because he was lonely and unmarried nnd discontented with his Job. Busbey insisted Montgomery, 41, was "very popular and was a bachelor by choice . , . his pro' motion was fairly rapid, as he was head of the -Finnish desk after about six years with the State Department." •'Mystery and Secrecy" Busbey said the State Department and police have surrounded the case with "mystery and secrecy" but the .public Is entitled to, know the truth because Montgomery . held an Important anrt: confidential position and handled - secret government documents. "It may be no more than a co- Incfdence that he worked Jn a government ngency where Communists, Communist sympathizers, arid poor loyalty risks have f lngued our,, security," Busbey aid, adding: "In view of the (act that Montgomery'.brought his own life 'to an end, we should not assume that he was Innocent of such associations. For'our stakes, as well as for his, we should know whether or not he was innocent . . . ." Busbey: said there Is renson to believe that soma time elapsed between the discovery of Montgomery's body; ,by Marvin Braverman, Washington, attorney ; whose home Montgomery shared, 'and Braverman's telephone call to R District of Columbia commissioner. "What happened during lhat time?" Busbey nsfced. "Did Montgomery leave ( a note, as suicides generally do? Was such a hole destroyed to protect ihe dead, nnd perhaps some living?" F. Joseph Donobue, one of three commissloricrs who govern the District of Columbia, saltl there was no mystery as far as he was concerned. • Donohue said he and Bravermnn are old friends. He said Braverman called about 5 a.m. Saturday, Informed him he had called tbo police and " an ambulance and Rsked what else to do. Donohue - said he replied there was nothing else to be done that he could see. Police Chief Robert V. Murray said there was no note. If there had been, he said, it would havo been brought to light by now. Deputy Coroner Christopher J. Murphy said no certificate of suicide has been Issued, pending completion of investigations. Purse Snatchers Turn to Skates LOS ANGELES (&}— Mrs. Virginia Charles told police that three teen.,age girls swooped <io\vn on her from behind last night, grabbed her purse containing $50.50, and sped Into the darkness, The girls were on roller skates.
