John Calvin McCaskill, 91, of Clinton, S.C., went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, May 18, 2005. The son of the late Alvin Lewis McCaskill and Louise Hay McCaskill of Bainbridge, he called Liberty Hill, S.C., home. As a member of Phi Kappa Beta and Pi Kappa Phi, he graduated magna cum laude from Presbyterian College in 1933.

He was known as Skeeter in college. Upon graduation, he served as schoolteacher and then was as commissioned as Second Lieutenant Infantry in the Army Reserves. Serving faithfully in the Army in the Pacific Command of World War and two tours of duty in Korea, he was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and Bronze Star with Oakleaf Cluster. Receiving the Legion of Merit medal, he retired from the army with the rank of colonel. Faithful to both church and family, he served as an elder in the Presbyterian Church.

He was both clember of session the First and a Presbyterian founding Church in Honolulu, Hawaii. He had been a member of Shandon and Eastminster Presbyterian Churches in Columbia, S.C., and Purity Presbyterian Church in Chester, S.C. Celebrating the family's Scottish Presbyterian heritage, he was a member of the Montreat Scottish Society. He was preceded in death by his first wife of 43 years, Olga Heins McCaskill, and by his sister, Annie Righton McCaskill Hodgkin. He is survived by a son, Manning and his wife, Judy, of Gainesville, grandchildren, John Edward McCaskill of Gainesville, Lawrence Paul and wife, Denise McCaskill, of Alexandria, and Suzanne and husband, Don Barrett, of Keystone, a and great-grandchildren, Matthew Aaron, Patrick Ryan and Victoria Grace Barrett.

He also is survived by a son John (Jack) and wife, Fran McCaskill, of Montreat, N.C.; grandson, Lewis and wife, Heather "Bischoff McCaskill; and great-grandchildren, Kate-Elizabeth, John Calvin IV and Thomas Jonathan McCaskill of Aiken, S.C.; and grandson, the Rev. James C. McCaskill of South Yorkshire, preceded in death by his second wife of 20 years, Johngy Richards Bankhead. He is survived by her children, Elizabeth (Bettie) Bankhead Buccheri of Evanston, the Rev. Jimmy Bankhead and his wife, Cissy, of Amarillo, Texas, and Johnny and his wife, Traci, of Tucker, Ga.

He is survived by her grandchildren, Mark Buccheri, Sarah Buccheri, Steven Bankhead, Carolyn Bankhead, Michael Bankhead, Jonathan Bankhead, Katherine Bankhead, Jake Bankhead, Ben Bankhead, John Bankhead and Barbara Bankhead. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at the Presbyterian Home of South Carolina in Clinton with the Rev. Robert Brozina officiating. A funeral Mass will be held at noon Monday at Our Lady of the Angels Catholic Church. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to noon Monday at the church.

Westmoreland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. WILLIAM EARL CORDELL ASHEVILLE William Earl Cordell, 85, of Asheville, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Mountain Area Hospice Solace Center. A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Groce United Methodist Church. The Rev.

CANTON Putnam, 61, of 14 Wednesday, May Haywood Regional He was a native PUTNAM Howard Luther Mitchell died 18, 2005, at Medical Center. of Haywood County and the son of Lula Lusk Burnette of Candler. Howard was unexpectedly taken from his loving, family on this received into the loving arms of his eternal family on the golden streets of heaven. He will always be remembered as a loving and very giving soul to all who knew him. His family will miss him immensely, and he will definitely be cherished fondly by only grandson and sidekick, Blake.

He was owner and operator of Putnam Carpets and Cabinets, which was destroyed by fire in 2000. He was member of West Canton Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon, and an active participant in years past in the Royal Ambassadors. He was a member of the VFW Post No. 5198 and had just been elected as post commander. He was an Army veteran of the Vietnam War and was awarded two bronze service stars and a national defense medal.

In addition to his mother, he is survived by his wife of 40 years, Ann Warren Putnam; a daughter, Renee Putnam of Canton; a son, Chad Wayne Putnam of the home; three sisters, Virgie Head of Canton and Geneva Tabor and Tilda Bryson, both of White Pine, two brothers, Robert Putnam of Clyde and Tommy Putnam of Asheville; a grandson, John Blake Rhinehart; and several nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 4. p.m. Saturday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes Cremation Services with the Rev. Matthew Pruett officiating.

Entombment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park Mausoleum with military graveside rites conducted by American Legion Post No. 47 and VFW Post No. 5202. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home.

At other times, the family will be at the residence of his daughter, Renee Putnam, 30 Valley Hill Drive. Putnam Waycaster, 90, of Nydegger Road, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, in a Spruce Pine rest home.

She was a daughter of the late Rex and Georgia Culbreth Waycaster. She was preceded in death by a sister, Violet Waycaster, and a brother, Eugene Waycaster. Ms. Waycaster was retired from the Navy, where she had served as chief petty officer in World War I and the Korean War. She was also retired from the U.S.

Postal Service. Ms. Waycaster was a member of Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. Survivors include her sister and brother-in-law, Marilyn and John Wood of Little Switzerland; brother and sister-in-law, Nick and Ethel Waycaster of Marion; sister-in-law, Mary Elizabeth Waycaster of Marion; nephews, Mike, Alvin, Kenneth and Nick Waycaster; niece, Eugenia Guffey of Nebo; seven great-nephews; two great-nieces, two great-great-nephews; and six great-great-nieces. The funeral service will be held at 3 p.m.

Sunday at Chestnut Grove Baptist Church. The Revs. Vernon Buchanan and Richard Hollifield will officiate. Burial will be in Collis Cemetery. The U.S.

Edna Reeves, 51, formerly of 588. Dovers Branch Road in Busick, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was born Dec. 16, 1953, to the late Jessie and Helen Murphy Hoover. Mrs.

Reeves attended Pleasant Valley Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by a brother, Clifford Bud Hoover, and a sister, Emma Robinson. Surviving are a daughter, Shannon McCanless and husband, Tucker, of Busick; her husband, Michael Reeves of Bakersville; three sisters, Hazel Roberts of Mars Hill, 1 Mary Alice Wyatt of Newdale and Mary Wilma McCall of Swannanoa; five brothers, Dennis Hoover of Lincolnton, David Hoover of Spruce Pine, Ed Hoover of Estatoe and Ricky and Daniel Hoover, both of Newdale; and two grandchildren, Kirsten and Kenya Gouge. A funeral service will be held in honor of Mrs. Reeves at 2 p.m.

Sunday at Morningstar Baptist Church in Newdale. Mrs. Reeves body will be placed in the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The Revs. Billy Mitchell and Bradley Boone will officiate.

MAX THOMAS PHILLIPS CANTON Max Thomas Phillips, 82, of Canton passed away Thursday, May 19, 2005, at his resi- dence. He was born in Hart County, July 28, 1922, to the late James W. and Azalea Pierce Phillips. He retired from Champion International after many years of service. He served his country in the Max Thomas Merchant Marines.

Max Thomas Phillips He enjoyed spending time with the retirees group; Snug Harbor "Old Timers Association," woodworking, bluegrass and ole-timey country music, but he especially loved to spoil his family. He is survived by one son, David Phillips and his wife, Patrice White, of Morganton; a daughter, Kim and her husband, Keith Corzine, of Cullowhee; three, brothers, Monroe "Bill" Phillips Canton, Johnny Phillips of Waynesville and Bob Phillips of Shreveport, two sisters, Gladys Sutton and Bess Phillips, both of Canton; three grandchildren, Evan Phillips of Summerville, S.C., and Coleman Corzine and Connor Corzine, both of Cullowhee; two great-grandchildren, Madalyn and Chelsea Phillips; a special friend, Mabel Keylon of Canton; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Garrett Funerals and Cremations with the Rev. Rick Gosnell officiating.

DONALD JACK McCALL WAYNESVILLE Donald Jack McCall, 52, of 301 Valley View Terrace, died on Thursday, May 19, 2005. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of Robert and Ruth Keener McCall. He was preceded death by his grandmother, Texie Keener. He was co-owner and operator of Hazelwood Transmission and attended Dellwood Baptist Church. He was active in the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Program of Haywood County.

He is survived in addition to his parents, by his wife of 19 years, Susan Owen McCall; a sister, Shirley Ferguson, and her husband, Sam, of Maggie Valley; a brother, Jerry McCall and his wife, Jeanne, of Waynesville; four nephews, Jason and Jeremy Ferguson and Christopher and Tyler Morrow; two nieces, Missy and Laura Burgess; three great-nieces, Jordan and Jayla Ferguson and Kassidy Price; two great Andrew Caleb Ferguson and Price, who was very special in Donnie and Susan's life. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Dellwood Baptist Church with the Rev. Jason Ledford officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery.

MAUDE ROGERS McFALLS CANTON Maude Rogers McFalls, 97, formerly of the Stamey Cove Community, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at the Brian Center of Waynesville. She was a native of Haywood County and the daughter of the late James Baxter and Samantha Shipman Rogers. She was preceded in death by her husband, James Alfred McFalls, who died in 1971. She was a homemaker and a member of Longs United Methodist Church. She is survived by three sons, James A.

McFalls Jr. and his wife, Betty, of Waynesville, Robert McFalls and his wife, Marlyn, of Canton and Joe McFalls of Leicester; a sister, Grace Shepherd of Canton; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Homes Cremation Services with the Rev. Brad Holliman and Daniel Wilson officiating.

WANDA BELL WILSON MORGANTON Wanda Bell Storey Wilson, 74, died Thursday, May 19, 2005. A graveside service will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at Forest Hill Cemetery. Sossoman Funeral Home is assisting the family. ZEKE 'PAPAW' BAKER ARDEN Zeke Baker, 83, of 574 Long Shoals Road, died on Thursday, May 19, 2005.

He was born in Buncombe County and resided in the Avery's Creek community his entire life. He was the son of the late Melvin and Maggie Beachboard Baker. In 1982, he was preceded in death by his wife, Eva McMinn Baker. He also was Zeke preceded in death by Baker two daughters, Jane and Carolyn; a son, Bill; and a brother, Earl Baker. He retired from Cranston Print Works in 1983.

His favorite hobby was his interest in honeybees for which he was a beekeeper for over 70 years. He is survived by his daughter, sons, Betty Bob Lois of Baker Avery's and his Creek; wife, sour, of Asheville, David Baker of Swannanoa, Ron Baker and his wife, of Leicester and Mike Baker and his wife, Cheri, of Avery's Creek; and 11 grandchildren. The graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mount Zion Church Cemetery with Minister Jason Cole officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.

Wiley McKinley Rice, 74, of 6134 Sweet Home Church Road, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus, in Asheville, N.C.

Mr. Rice was born June 3, 1930, in Madison County, N.C. He had been a resident of Buncombe County, N.C., most of his life before moving to Myrtle Beach in 2002. Mr. Rice was a member of Forestbrook Baptist Church.

Wiley retired from Fredrickson's Motor Express in 1993. he was a veteran of the Navy. He was the son of the late Lawson and Texana Arrington Rice and was also preceded in death by a sister, Vera Fisher and brothers, Joe and Perry Rice. Surviving are his loving wife of 48 years, Patsy Reynolds Rice of the home; daughter, Janice Reed of Black Mountain, N.C.; son, David Rice and wife, Tammy, of Myrtle Beach; sister, Harriet Ledford of Oregon; brothers, Wesley Rice and wife, Ruth of Weaverville, N.C., and Zeke Rice of Mars Hill, N.C.; grandchildren, Ashley Reed of Black Mountain, Tristan Gregory of Fairview, N.C., Jared, Cory and Cody Rice, all of Myrtle Beach. The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m.

TRULL CANTON Ollie Howell Trull, 86, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center.

She was a native and lifelong resident of Haywood County and was a daughter of the late Joseph "Berry" and Bertha Sharp Howell. She was the wife of the late Charles "Ed" Trull, who died in 1978 and was also preceded in death by three brothers, James, J.B. and Lewis Howell; one sister, Donnie Howell; and one grandson, Wesley Trull. Mrs. Trull was also a member of Cruso United Methodist Church.

She is survived by three sons, Charles L. Trull and his wife, Sue, Gordon Trull and his wife, Elneda, and Dwight Trull, all of Canton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be at 4 p.m. Sunday in the Canton chapel of Wells Funeral Home Cremation Services with the Rev. Matthew Pruett officiating.

VERNA CORINE SNYDER WISE CANDLER Verna Corine Snyder Wise, 78, of Candler, passed away Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Mission Hospitals, St. Joseph Campus, in Asheville. lovinhe was mother, a great wife and loving nana. She will be missed greatly. She will receive her rewards walking the streets of heaven.

A native of Buncombe County, Verna she was the daughter of the late Alfred and Wise Stella Snyder. She Verna Wise was employed by Sears and was a member of Oak Hill United Methodist Church. She is survived by her husband, John Wise; a daughter, Jeanette Wise Hutchinson and her husband, James; a son, John Wise and his wife, Faye, all of Candler; one brother, Norman Snyder of Asheville; two grandchildren, Allen and Jason Watts; and four great-grandchildren, Casey, Justin, Tanner and Jayden Brooke Watts. The service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Chapel of Faith at Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Candler.

The Rev. James Hutchinson will officiate. Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Candler. The family will receive friends immediately following service, and at other times, will be at the home of her daughter, Jeanette Hutchinson, 49 Rangeview Acres, Candler. FRED G.

GALLOWAY WAYNESVILLE Fred G. Galloway, 82, of Asbury Road, died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at Haywood Regional Medical Center. A native of Haywood County, he was the son of the late Stephen Wiley and Viola Davis Galloway. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Sarah Ann Carswell Galloway, who died in 1989. He was an Army veteran of World War II, and he retired in 1985 from Champion Paper with 35 years of employment.

He was a member of Dellwood Baptist Church, where he held many offices in the church. He is survived by his wife of 15 years, Alma Best Galloway; a daughter, Sue Culpepper and her husband, Jim, of Ocean Isle Beach; a son, Kenneth Galloway and his wife, Nancy, of Gig Harbor, two stepdaughters, Susan Bell and her husband, the Rev. Richard Bell, of Erie, and Marcia Taylor and her husband, the Rev. Wayne Taylor, of Cable, Ohio; two stepsons, Jim Best and his wife, Valene, of Elkin Park, Stewart Best his wife, Joyce, of Hollywood, a sister, Evelyn Galloway Chambers of Canton; two brothers, Davis Galloway and his wife, Virginia, of Waynesville and Roy Lee Galloway and his wife, Linda, of Newport, two, grandchildren, Rex Culpepper Ocean Isle Beach and Dr. Perry Montsinger and her husband, Kevin, of Burgaw; five stepgranddaughters, Jessica and Elizabeth Best and Kristine, Cheisia and Tiffany Bell; three stepgrandsons, Darrell Best Chris and Brian Hassinger; and one greatgrandchild, Morgan Price of Little River.

RICHARD CHANDLER SIMMONS BLACK MOUNTAIN Richard Chandler Simmons, 64, of 94 Camp Branch Road, died Thursday, May 19, 2005. A native of Buncombe County, he was a son of the late Horace and Katherine "Kate" Atkins Simmons. He was owner of Simmons Grading Company. Surviving are his wife, Nancy Harris Simmons; brother, Bill Simmons of Black Mountain; and several nieces and nephews.

The service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at Tabernacle United Methodist Church. The Rev. Richard Ploch will officiate. Burial will be in Mountain View Memorial Park.

CHARLES JAMES LITTLEJOHN ASHEVILLE Charles James Littlejohn, 56, of Asheville, died Tuesday, May 17, 2005, at Mission Hospitals, Memorial Campus. Born in Chimney Rock, he was a son of the late James P.

Littlejohn and Ella Mae Logan Littlejohn. He was a retired cement finisher. Surviving his wife, Mammie M. Littlejohn of Taylorsville; one sister, JoAnn L.

Conyers of Atlanta; and four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Wilson Funeral Directors. The Rev. Donald McDaniel will officiate.

LINDA MACFIE ASHEVILLE Linda Ulrickson Macfie died Thursday, May 19, 2005, at her home at Givens Estates. she had been a resident of Asheville since 1987 and was a member of Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church. Mrs. Macfie was born Nov. 15, 1915, in Round Rock, Texas, to Carl Albin Ulrickson, a Swedish immigrant dairyman, and Esther Olson Ulrickson, the daughter of Swedish immigrants.

She attended Fort Worth, Texas, city schools and graduated from Bethany College in Lindsborg, subsequently earning a master of arts degree from the University oft Texas in Austin. Through the later 1930s and early 1940s, Mrs. Macfie worked in several teaching, editorial and administrative positions. During World War she entered medical school at The Johns Hopkins University with the intention of contribution to the war effort as a physician in overseas service. She completed two years of medical studies by war's end, at which time she married Wade Hampton Macfie, returning with him in 1946 to his family home in Winnsboro, S.C., to begin their own family.

For the ensuing 40 years, she was active in the life of that community as wife, mother, churchwoman, gardener, teacher, artist, advocate for public education and friend to all children. Following Mr. Macfie's death in 1986, she moved to Asheville, where she continued such pursuits for the balance of her life as advancing years allowed. Mrs. Macfie is survived by sisters, Virginia Ulrickson Jones and Miriam Ulrickson of Round Rock; sons, Wade Hampton Macfie and Davie Lynn Mactie; daughter-in-law, Evelyn McMaster Lyles; and granddaughters, Rebekah Caroline Macfie and Amanda Emelyn Macfie, all of Asheville.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Albin Ulrickson of Fort Worth. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Bethel Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church Cernetery in Winnsoboro with arrangements by Pope Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorials take the form of contributions ot the charity. of one's choice.

In consideration of her love for children and animals, donations to a church-sponsored home for children or The Heifer Project International would be particularly fitting. JESSIE ROBINSON PENLAND BURNSVILLE Jessie Robinson Penland, 90, of Horton Creek, died Friday, May 20, 2005, at Yancey Nursing Center. A native of Yancey County, she was a daughter a of the late Fred and Ethel Anderson Robinson and wife of Glen Penland, who died in 2000. She was also preceded in death by sisters, Flossy Scott and Elizabeth Patton and a brother, Kenneth Robinson. She was a lifelong member of Paint Gap Presbyterian Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Lois Westall of Burnsville and Louise Robinson of Weaverville; four sons, Harold Penland, Claiborne Penland, Maurice Penland and Jerry Penland, all of Burnsville; a sister, Myrtle Wilson of Pontiac, eight grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren. The funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in the chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Shelton and Dr.

Chris Morgan will officiate. Burial will be in Penland Family Cemetery on Horton Creek. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
