He was born Jan. 15, 1958. in Scotts Bluff, to Kenneth S. Prairie of Rapid City, S.D., and Christine Garnier Wheeler of Pine Ridge, S.D.

His maternal grandparents were the late David F. Garnier and Ellen Spotted Elk and his paternal grandparents were Christine Weston Prairie of Rapid City and the late Solomon Prairie. He was preceded in death by one brother, Blaine. He was Oglala Lakota Sioux from the Pine Ridge Reservation and a descendant of "Chief Big of the Hunkpapa Nation. Marty was educated at Bishop Hare Episcopal School and graduated from San Francisco State College.

He was a member of the Makasan Presbyterian Congregation in Oglala and All Souls Episcopal Church in Asheville. He had been a resident of Asheville since 1987. As a long-term survivor of which he first encountered among his friends San Francisco during the early 1980s, his life work was a dedicated educator for the prevention of STDs, TB and abuse, especially among minorities, the homeless and gay men of color. He was an early advocate of the Natural Opinion Leader (NOL) approach to prevention involving motivation and education of indigenous community members to reach their peers with culturally appropriate and effective interventions. Marty was a co- founder of Loving Food Resources, an food bank; C.L.O.S.E.R.., a local lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered advocacy organization; and the Western North Carolina Community Health Services clinic (WNCCHS), where he also served on the board of directors.

He was co-founder and co-director of the Needle Exchange Program of Asheville (NEPA), which has served as a model for prevention of HIV transmission among injection drug users throughout North Carolina and beyond. He was an advisory member to the board of the North American Syringe Exchange Network (NASEN). On his own and as a representative of the National Native American AIDS Prevention Center (NNAAPC), he worked with many Native American tribes including the Sioux, Navajo, Cherokee and Catawba, alerting elders and educating youth in an effort to avert a developing epidemic on the reservations and among all Native Americans. He was an active member and participant in the National Minority AIDS Coalition (NMAC) from whom he received a 10-year achievement recognition award. Marty traveled extensively abroad as well, sharing his prevention techniques and message and gaining knowledge at international AIDS conferences from places as far and wide as Yokohama, Geneva and Vancouver.

After accompany hospice nurses on horne visits during the 2000 International AIDS Conference in Durban, South Africa, he became particularly committed to upgrading care opportunities for South African AIDS patients who cannot get antiretroviral treatment that is taken for granted in the developed world, and for whom even hospice care is limited by lack of pain medicines, dietary supplements and clean water supplies. Marty has one brother, Kenneth "Ted" Prairie of Rapid City; two sisters, Valerie Brewer of Pembroke and Eldonna Prairie of Denver, Colo. Surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews of Oglala, S.D. and Rapid City; his life partner, Paul Arons of Tallahassee, a very dear friend and roommate, Michael Harney; and his special dog, "Pockets." A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Cathedral of All Souls in Biltmore Village.

Honorary pallbearers include special friends, relatives and colleagues from throughout the southeast, including the Catawba Nation, as well as from the San Francisco area. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Marty Prairie Memorial Fund, Western North Carolina Community Health Services, 10 Ridgelawn Asheville, NC 28806. Morris Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. EDITH GADDY CLYDE Edith Messer Cogburn Gaddy, 81, of Clyde, died Saturday, March 17, 2001. Born March 16, 1920, in Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late James Lawson and Mellie McElroy Messer.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Ben Gaddy and Ed Cogburn, and six brothers and one sister. She was a member of Louisa Chapel United Methodist Church. Surviving are two sons, Jim Cogburn of Canton, Bill Cogburn of Clyde; one step-daughter, Beatrice Conard of Allens Creek: one sister, Margaret Bartinikas of Clyde; four grandchildren and nine -grandchildren. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of Garrett Funeral Home, Waynesville.

The Rev. Matt Pruett will officiate. Burial will be in Garrett Hillcrest Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Ray Parton, Joe Harris, Terry Harris, John Coyne, Don Cogburn and Donald Hughey. Honorary pallbearers will be Richard Deweese and Tim Anderson.

BESSIE PARHAM FOX HENDERSONVILLE Bessie Parham Fox, 87, formerty of 20 Cottage Asheville, died Thursday, March 15, 2001, Margaret Pardee Memorial Hospital after a period of declining health. A lifelong resiBessie dent of Buncombe Fox County, she had resided in Henderson County for the past two years.

She was a daughter of the late Henry and Carrie Rymer Parham and wife of Clyde James Fox, who died June 29, 1979. Mrs. Fox retired from Woodfin School Cafeteria after 20 years of service. She was the oldest member of Elk Mountain Baptist Church in Asheville, where she was a member for 68 years. She was a charter member of the Woodfin Senior Citizens Club of which she helped organize and of the W.N.C.

Home Extension Club since 1945. Surviving are her sons. Jimmy Fox of North Myrtle Beach, S.C., and John Fox and his wife, Harriett, of Hendersonville: a sister and her husband, Hazel and Sam Fore of Fletcher, a brother, Richard Parham of Asheville; grandchildren, Donna Fox Wiggins and her husband, Danny, whom made her home, Rebecca Batchelors. Melissa Owenby, Bryan Fox and Jef Fox: great-grandchildren, Elizabeth Wiggins, Jeffrey Owenby, Andrew Owenby, Andi Batchelors, Madison Fox and Weston Fox. Services will be held at 11 a.m.

native of Haywood County, she was a daughter of the late Robert and Mattie Gant. She was married to Carroll T. Cornwell, Bertha who died in 1984. Cornwell She was preceded in death by two Bertha Cornwell sons. Billy J.

and Steve Cornwell. Mrs. Cornwell was a member of Long Shoals Baptist Church for many years and had served as manager of the Valley Springs School lunchroom. She was a devoted mother and grandmother and will be truly missed by her family. Surviving are a daughter and her husband.

in to Charles J. and Mae Collins. He attended the University of Wisconsin and graduated with a D.V.M. degree from Michigan State College of Agriculture and Applied Science in 1942. He served in the United States Charles Collins Army Veterinary Corps from 1942- 1946.

After a decade of private veterinary practice in northern Wisconsin, Dr. Collins joined the meat inspection division of the United States Department of Agriculture. He retired from federal service in Fort Atkinson, in 1983, having inspected at packing plants in Chippewa Falls, Eau Claire and Fort Atkinson, for almost 30 years. Dr. Collins had made his home in Arden since 1986.

Dr. Collins was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Young at Hearts Club of St. Barnabas Parish. He was also a long-time member of the Lions Club International in both Wisconsin and North Carolina, a lifetime member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Bloomer, Chapter, and previously held office in the local chapter of AARP. He was also a member of NARFE and various local ballroom and square dance groups.

Dr. Collins was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years, Bertie Ellen Collins; his parents; and sisters, Mary Collins and Geraldine Zuchike. Surviving are his four children and their spouses, Charles and Christine Collins of Phoenix, Rita and Dave McSorley of San Antonio, Texas, Jim and Suna Collins of Chiayi, Taiwan, and Dave and Sue Collins of Raleigh; one brother, John Collins of Racine, one sister, Jane Wiese of Racine; dear friend, Lois Curall of his grandchildren and their spouses, David and Michelle McSorley, Katie and John Moloko, Stephen McSorley, Matthew McSorley, James Collins, Christopher Collins, Colleen Collins, Michael Collins; numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends. A native of Gaston County, he lived most of his life in Cherokee County. He was a WW veteran of the United States Navy.

He worked at Herberts Dry Cleaners for a number of years, he was a paper carrier for the Asheville Citizen and retired from American Thread Co. of Marble. After Harold retired, he worked with the U.S. Forest Service and was the son of the late James and Gertrude Brown Brown and was preceded in death by his wife, Lola Catherine West Brown. Surviving are two sons, Richard Brown of Marble and Randy Brown of Morganton, five daughters, Iris Coffey, Brenda Brown and Terry Dalrymple, all of Marble, Connie Patton of Blairsville, and Beth George of Alpharetta, three sisters, Mae Pullium and Gladys Luther, both of Andrews, and Vanna Holloway of Asheville; six grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

ROSA WOODY GREEN MOUNTAIN Rosa Thomas Woody, 95, of Green Mountain, formerly of Lenoir, died Friday, March 16, 2001, at Spruce Pine Community Hospital. She was born Aug. 10, 1905, in Mitchell County to the late Zebulon and Laura Hughes Thomas.

She was also preceded in death by her husband, Dewey E. Woody; and one daughter, Madge Woody Burgin. Mrs. Woody was a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. Surviving are two daughters and their husbands, Helen and Harold Bowman of Granite Falls and Ona and Charles Hopson of Green Mountain; nine grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and five greatgreat-grandchildren.

native of Brooklyn, he was born on 18, 1923, to the Jack and Adela Kalmanson. At 17 joined the United States Navy, retiring from the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Kalmanson had owned two brokerfirms in Miami, before moving Ocala where he owned and operatOcala Tools.

Mr. Kalmanson enjoyed working the Webster Flea Market and others. He was a member of the Ocala Elks Club and the Moose Lodge. David had a heart of gold. He would take the homeless into a restaurant and feed them, offered room and board to those who needed a place to stay, and would give money to disabled veterans.

He loved animals and children, dancing and traveling. He loved life and will be missed and remembered by all who knew him. David had two favorite sayings, "Laughter is good and "When I'm perfect, I'll expect you to be is survived by a sister, Lillian Stafford of Miami; a brother. Bill Kalmanson of Tucson, a host of friends; and three children. A service to celebrate the life of David Kalmanson will be held at 2 p.m.

March 25 in the Swannanoa chapel of Penland and Sons Funeral Home, Swannanoa, N.C. MILDRED KILPATRICK BREVARD Mildred Edens Kilpatrick, 89. died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Tore's Home in Brevard. Born in Pickens, S.C.; she was a long-time resident of Transylvania County. She was the daughter of the late William and Irene Jenkins Edens.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John Kilpatrick, and a daughter, Dorothy Jean Thomas. Mrs. Kilpatrick was a member of First Baptist Church. Surviving are one son, Chester Kilpatrick of Pisgah Forest; one brother, Thomas Daniel Edens of Brevard; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m.

She started the first special education class in the Asheville area, which was held in the All Souls Episcopal Church for many years. Mrs. Cartwright also started a special education class for Sunday school at St.

Paul's Methodist Church, which is now known as the Cartwright class. She attended St. Paul's for more than 50 years. Helen was an inspirational friend who always had a compliment for others even when she was loaded up with her own many misfortunes. She was a dedicated optimist, filled with hope and courage even in her darkest days.

Her bravery and spirit were a model for all who knew her. After retiring from teaching, Mrs. Cartwright returned to college to complete a second Baccalaureate in Fine Arts, and became an admired watercolorist, exhibiting widely in both juried and one-woman shows. She is currently exhibited at the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro. Mrs.

Cartwright was the widow of Ralph Cartwright of Sherman, Texas, and had served in the United States Marines during WWII. She was a daughter of the late W. Clark and Elizabeth McCracken Medford. Surviving are daughters, Talula Elizabeth Cartwright of Asheboro and Julia Ann Cartwright of Asheville; son, Dean Medford Cartwright of Charlottesville, sister, Anna Robertson of Windermere, brother, Wilson C. Medford of Waynesville; granddaughters, Charity Crabtree of Atlanta and Erin Cartwright of Charlottesville; grandsons, Baxter Crabtree of Greensboro, isaac England of Asheboro and Brian Cartwright of Charlottesville.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Methodist Church. The Rev. Charles B.

She Macfarland was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Robin Adair Macfarland; a son, Robert Lewis Macfarland; and a grandson, Jeffrey Lynn Morris.

Among her many talents were oil painting and crafting with natural materials. She was a member of Black Mountain Baptist Church. Surviving are five daughters, Betty Louise Miller of Norfolk, Janet Ruth Morris and Barbara Dale Gaines, both of Black Mountain, JoAnna Moody of Highland Village, Texas, and Sandi Halstead of Asheville: a son, Raymond Eugene Macfarland of Florida; 22 grandchildren and many great-grandchildren.
