The Burlington (Vr.l Fre Press. Wsdrwsdoy. October 30, 1985 3D Switcheroo Sends Parents Dashing to Class Tfitmont MIS i i i i ft. By SALLY TROUT Gamwtt Newt Service MASON, Mich. A dash to the school bus, a mad rush to school lockers, making it to class on time It was all in a day's work for 150 parents who switched places Thursday with their kids.

The "Great Switcheroo" began Wednesday and finished Thursday at the Mason Middle School. Parents attended class and their children stayed home. School Principal John Borgert, who suggested the trade-off, says there was "overwhelmingly positive parental response to the day in school." "I admit I was on pins and needles at the first of the week, but the switch has done everything it was supposed to do in improving communications." The fast pace for parents started with meeting the school bus before daylight. They had to contend with the lunch line and finding the right classrooms, all the while getting a first-hand look at how a normal school day supposedly goes for their youngsters. There were problems math problems among them.

Some parents were stumped on some of the math until they got a refresher course. Then it was on to the computer lab and further challenges. "It's been a long time since I was in school and there have been many changes, but it has been a real experience and I am thoroughly enjoying myself," parent Pat Hampton said, adding she felt strongly enough about the opportunity to go to school that she took a day off work to attend. Most teachers agreed having parents in class was no different than any other school day. Calling the switch day "very enlightening for parents," science teacher Helen Spicuzza questioned what students gained from staying home.

In most cases the youngsters were left with a work list resembling mom's regular duties at home. Others got to go with an adult to a work place for some career exposure. The parental-student switch day originated in Minnesota and was meant to promote understanding between parent, child and school. Sharon Roush says she now understands how frightening the first day of school is for children and will be more understanding in the future. "I have enjoyed attending school today because I am now able to visualize better what goes on in my son's typical class day," she said.

Students who did attend school offered ready directions and a willingness to help with lockers for those parents not mechanically inclined. "Educational research has proven the best way to improve a child's school performance is for parents to communicate with him or her talk about the student's school day," Borgert said. "We certainly have given families a common ground to talk about with the parent-student exchange." irus.Lnn HARR CONVECTION CROWAVE OVEN CM BR EM MCE carwsq: with CompuCook, the oven that bakes, browns and crisps! Anne Sarcka's Nairobi Journal, "Creating Jungles in Vermont: the Interior Landscaping Business," plus news and advice on money, jobs, families, handling stress and keeping fit. Vermont Woman will be built around a theme each month, Gillis said. Current plans call for the second issue to focus on Vermont families and the third to attempt to define where the power lies in Vermont. Rickey Gard Diamond, 38, of Montpelier, is the paper's editor.

"I expect we'll have people from the left and the far right. We'll go for the common denominator when we can," she said. Gillis, who is financially backing the paper, oversees the operation. "It's my paper, my money and my energy," she said. "The timing is right," said Gillis, a former media buyer for Garden Way who has lived in Vermont since 1974.

It's Vermont Woman, a 44-page newspaper, with women as publisher and editor, which made its debut Tuesday. Twenty thousand copies were distributed statewide and a party was held at the Flynn Theater to launch the new venture. "Vermont Woman is for all women, on the job, at home, and in volunteer work," said publisher Suzanne Gillis, who is also advertising and marketing director. The 10 women on the cover represent artists, politicians, activists, secretaries, business women, athletes, mothers, and the governor of Vermont. "The cover reflects the editorial board's struggle to get Vermont Woman started on the right foot," she explained.

The tabloid-size newspaper's logo was designed by Lyn Severance, who also did the graphics for "Vermont Woman." "The paper made it on its first issue," said Gillis. "It includes a full 22 pages of sold advertising space. That's a significant indicator of the support we have already. I expect the paper to grow at this pace."
