OUT OF TOWNERS MAIL COUPON OR CALL COLLECT, i I PLEASE SEND ME CREDIT APPLICATION FOR A HOME By BOB TERRELL Citizen Sports Editor Should the Asheville Tourists happen to come up with a Southern League pennant contender this summer, most of the stretch run will be played right here in town. During the month of August the Tourists will play 20 home games at McCormick Field and only 11 on the road, according to the league schedule which was officially released Tuesday. And if the Tourists get off to a fast start, local fans will benefit again from the schedule.

Sixteen of Asheville's first NBA, while Cincinnati is second. As for the 76ers' newest acquisition, the 7-foot. 1 Chamberlain, greatest scoring machine in the game's history, Auerbach said: "It's a shame when one guy can dictate to the league what he is going to do. "They say Philadelphia has won three in a row since Wilt joined the club. "Actually the 76ers are 4-3 because Wilt didn't report right away.

The team had won one and lost three between the time he was traded and decided to get to work. "Philadelphia can't catch Cincinnati during the regular season. Those three losses suffered 24 games are home games. "We couldn't have a more ideal schedule," said General Manager Jim Mills Tuesday. "Now if we can come up with a ball club to match, we'll be all right." Every indication points to a strong, well-balanced Tourist team this summer, a team capable of making a run for the pennant.

The first indication is Pittsburgh's promise to Tourist President Fleming Talman that Asheville will be given every available ball player capable of competing in the Southern League. The second indication is the promise of the Columbus, Ohio, club, the only Pittsburgh YOUR HOME DOES NOT HAVE TO BE PAID FOR. NO RED TAPE. ONE LOW MONTHLY PAYMENT. Harold Cooper, Columbus's general manager, told The Citizen Tuesday that Columbus has gone to considerable expense to build a strong, veteran AAA club in that city, thereby freeing at least half a dozen Pittsburgh farm hands for the Tourists. "Of course, we were trying to build our own club," said Cooper, "but when we bought or drafted these six players, we also had Asheville in mind. "We knew there wasn't enough talent in the organization to go around, so we went out and spent a lot of our own money buying ball players." The Jets drafted two men last December, lefthanded pitcher Frank Carpin irom Richmond, and third baseman Ossie Virgil from Seattle. In addition, Columbus has purchased the contracts of outfielder Bob Perry, a .276 hitter with the Los Angeles Angels last summer, Jack Da-maska, the International League's all-star second baseman at Jacksonville, and Ron Cox, an outfielder-first baseman, from Jacksonville. Columbus also repurchased pitcher Sam (Toothpick) Jones's contract from Baltimore.

The Orioles bought Jones from Columbus for their futile American League pennant run late last summer. Columbus will carry only 20 players from the start of the International League season to the iinish. these six already in the fold, the Jets need only 14 Pittsburgh farm hands to complete their roster. When those 14 are selected, Tourists Manager Pete Peterson will get the pick of tha rest. The Tourists will open the Southern League season against the Charlotte Hornets at McCormick Field April 16 in a three-game series.

During the season Asheville will play 11 Sunday dates at home and nine on the road. The Tourists will be out of town on the two big holidays, Memorial Day and the Fourth of July. "I would race again if the price were right," he said. "I'd run Daytona in a minute. I never have said I had quit completely, although I know that everybody gets too old to race. There Is a popular misconception that Smith's grinding wreck at Darlington in 1958 made up his mind to eliminate that track from his racing schedule, and sped the end of his racing career. "That isn't true." he said. "After that wreck, I ran both the Rebel 300 and the Southern 500 in 1959. I decided not to run any more at Darlington after an incident during a tire test in 1960.

"I was running a Pontiac when I spun, hit the fence, and knocked nine guard rail posts out of the ground. It didn't do $200 worth of damage to the car-somebody else ran the car the rest of the day-but I took one look at that fence and said, 'This is no place for Running Major Races Isn't Enough Jack ran his last Grand National race in Savannah, In 1963. Last summer he drove in two sportsman races, one at the New Asheville Speedway and another in the Peach Bowl in Atlanta. "Racing is an occupation that requires full time and complete participation," he explained. "Let me illustrate my point.

I think Fireball Roberts' trouble was simply that he wasn't running enough. It's a mistake for drivers to run only the major tracks and pass up the smaller races on the half- and quarter-mile tracks. Running the major races only, they don't drive enough to stay in condition. "I ran only 11 races in 1960, and I know what I'm talking about. These little races-the 100-milers-keep you in condition; they keep your hands tough, your reflexes sharp, and your muscles toned.

Your body is in better condition to meet the demands of racing on the superspeedways. "There's another thing. Running all the races, you maintain the 'feel' of your car. You know exactly what it will do and what it won't. You know instinctively whether to dive into a developing situation or whether to avoid it." Jack is extremely proud of his five children.
